sree, first lets clear up a couple of things
Golf Professional: a guy who works at a golf course or country club and gives lessons and organizes tournaments.
Professional Golfer: PGA Tour pros that make millions, or don't make millions and get cut from the tour, get divorced and become an alcoholic driving range pro.
Second:
Have you considered trying out for the NFL or NBA? If not, why? Do you think that getting on the PGA tour would be easier?
This is what you need to do
1. Purchase a set of golf clubs
2. Get some lessons from a local pro
3. Quit your day job. Hope the wife can support you.
4. Start practicing about 6-8hrs a day. That would be PRACTICING, not playing a round of golf. Beat balls till your hands bleed, your back is sore and you never want to play golf again. Rinse and repeat.
5. Play in the big amateur events in your state and around the country, State Am, U.S. Am...etc.
5. After about 2-3yrs if your average score is not below 70 and you have not won at least a few of these big Amateur events go back to your software engineer job.
6. If your average is below 70, then make your way down South and become a member of the NGA Hooters Tour, one of the bigger "mini" tours.

7. After you WIN about a half dozen times there then move up to the Nationwide Tour, this is a PGA development tour, the top 20 money winners graduate to become PGA Tour members.

8. Make top 20 then you are on your way. If you don't make top 20 then you can try the Q School. This is basically a tournament to try to get on the PGA Tour.

9. Now lets say you get on tour, your not done, you have to make the top 120 on the money list or you get bumped down to the nationwide tour again or have to go through q school. Fun.
This process generally will take you about 8-9 yrs and that is if you have been playing golf since you were 10. A great example is Zach Johnson (2007 Masters Champion) He played high school and college golf. Graduated college in 1998, started working on his game, joined the Hooters Tour, won a bunch, joined the Nationwide Tour, won a bunch, then finally made it to the PGA tour in 2004 (thats 6 years from 1998, and he already knew how to play golf).
Have fun.
