Gday from Aus!

Gday all!

I've been perusing the boards for a little while chasing information from the equipment reviews. I'm very close to going in and laying down my hard earned for a full set of new clubs. I started playing at the age of 17 through my schools’ monthly sport & recreation program. Having some lessons at that very early stage was immeasurably helpful. I was a very serious athlete at the time making my way playing Basketball. So I had some co-ordination and good balance. My height 6'4 and stick like 86kg frame was a little unusual at the time and being that this was in 1989, there was nothing like the technology and fitting systems that exist today. Never the less, my addictive personality got me hooked on the game in no time.

I suffered a serious knee injury playing basketball at the age of 21 (but man was it an awesome dunk!). Basically I was taken out just as I landed. Reassessing things basketball related led me to look towards seeking a love of the game I had lost in my pursuits of a serious sporting career. I never rehabbed my knee properly and never took my fitness seriously again. I switched to the life is short and for living frame of mind and began living differently. Unfortunately golf at this time also became a non-priority and I rarely played. I began working and had several different casual jobs that kept me busy. Combine that with a much heavier social schedule and golf faded into non-existence.

I met my wife at age 28 and we got married just last November. With my parents having lived in the USA for most of 2005/2006, we all wanted to spend more time together. And golf is proving to be a great pastime for us. My parents got into the game very late in life, about a year before they left for the US. With both my wife and I giving up social basketball (21 odd years for me, 17 odd for her, we needed a change). I suggested she consider getting into golf also. My skepticism when raising the idea was overwhelming. But I was pleasantly surprised when my wife thought it was a great idea.

I played a few rounds with my reasonably old budget clubs and played quite poorly at first. My swing still felt quite nice, but a lot of fine tuning and polish is needed. I played off a mid teen handicap around the age of 18, but now I'm struggling to break 100/110. Never the less my main enjoyment comes from the environment golf provides. We got to a golf shop not too long ago, looking for some clubs for my wife. By the time we were walking out we had 2 thousand odd dollars worth of clubs (last seasons stock allegedly) for $500. Including bags we were both excited about the buy.

It was about this time I started getting some golf magazines again. Reading all the equipment reviews, modern technology and equipment trends had me regretting the aforementioned purchase alarmingly quickly. Predominantly due to all the literature stressing getting "swing fitted". The sales man in the particular store just pointed me towards the +1 inch clubs on the floor. And with my wife being quite short, we were sold regular length clubs for her.

So our plans at the moment are to both get some decent clubs that are properly fitted. Then definitely some lessons for both of us. I'd like to see my wife taught the good habits early before she develops any bad ones. And I need a lot of reconstruction to get my game back on track. I'm thoroughly looking forward to getting back into the game for some MUCH needed fitness (I'm now about 6'4 around along with the 6'4 height ) and quality if somewhat frustrating times with my family.

The few games I've played recently showed a drastic difference between using my old clubs and the new ones we were recently sold. Obviously the driver was the most drastic and obvious difference. More that half of my drives with the new 460cc driver were dead straight and certainly a lot longer than the old one. This really reinforced to me the necessity to get some clubs fitted properly and more suited to our current and future skill levels.

I played a few days ago by myself on a course I've never played before. I really enjoyed just hitting the ball around alone on my day off from work. I had no players behind me and declined an invitation to join the group of 3 ahead of me. Being that I had all day to kill and was not in any hurry at all, I was really able to relax, take in the surroundings and absolutely chill out playing golf. I was very surprised how much I enjoyed it. And while this eliminates the major social aspect of golf I found many benefits in playing solo. There's nobody else to impress. You can play at your own pace. You can take time with your shots, especially your putts. That is probably what I find so appealing. When playing on courses that are busy, I tend to feel rushed. I'm always trying to be conscious of groups waiting behind us. It was really wonderful to be able to play slowly the other day. Mind you, I think that will be a rarity from here on.

Anyway that’s a lot more than I had in mind to share but if you've read this far, you should have a skeletal insight into my golf history and where I'm at today. I'm anxiously close to some new clubs and looking forward to getting my game back together. And even more playing golf with my wonderful wife. No she's not looking over my shoulder atm either I look forward to sharing time with you all on these forums. Mind you, like the bumper stickers say "I'D RATHER BE GOLFING!"

Cheers

Welcome to Golf Forum, thats quite a indepth introduction Jamin. Its interesting how people who were active in sports in their younger years, gravitate to golf as the mature :-). I found it interesting that you enjoyed the solo play, the wife and I like to get out at 6:15 am, thats almost the same, nobody in front, no body behind, can take our time and practice errant shots. I think if you check out the board you'll find its friendly and informal, so if you see any interesting postings, jump in and say hello. If you got golf questions, suggestions or just some good advice, by all means post them and knowing the group here, someone will get back to you. Again Welcome to Golf Forum.

yeah.

resounding 'yeah.'

it will be rare, but us singles (golf, i'm attached) will get something out of the game some never feel. i actually had a bird watch my birdie fall today, a chip in, she was lookin for bugs, ironic huh? it just happened today, and i know its one of my favorite memories.
(edit: really, i couldn't make that up. she (drab skinny robin, my training is in biology) was actually standing on my visualization landing spot as i approached the shot... had a good feeling about that chip. she(?) watched it fall to the green without flying away. too bad my WAHOO made it fly away. hit the pin on my next two chips for an eventual pars. no lie. one another SW, and the next a scared close 7-iron (i never trust the fringe).)

too bad the salesman at that golf store saw you as commission. i'm sure his/her heart was in golf, but backstock on a couple with their ears perked is a staple of the industry, sad to say. two for one commision... gotta believe the who's-gonna-drink-that-glass-of-water feeling on humans. in an ideal world, the salesman woulda mentioned club fitting as a continued service.

welcome to the forum. i'm a night owl for parts of the year (CST, US), and the aussies are my favorite online mates. i play poker over at pokerstars.net. i'm new here myself.

g'day.

edit: (i always reread the whole thread after i post, i'm an amateur writer too.) dont ever let them rush you on the green... i fight this all the time as a regular single player. dont let them do it, rush you. if you want to see the back side of the break (rear view aint just a button, folks...) and theyre waiting on the tee of a short par 4, so what? your green fees cover your putting time, and your putt for whatever score you shoot is just as important as anything else happening on the course. unless you get regular complaints on your pace of play, take your time.

Well he may have got $500 out of us, but thats all he and his store will ever get. I'm now about to spend $2500 and probably close to the same for my wife on new clubs. And when you add in all the peripherials over time it's his loss. Customer Service and Integrity are dying attributes in todays world. Which is such a shame. The people who have it, respect it and look for it in others are the silent ones who vote (or in this case shop) with their feet.

I'm not much of a reviewer, I'm not good enough to critique golf equipment. But in my new favourite golf shop we had much better service and quality advice. I hit the Cobra S9, Callaway Big Bertha and some Power Built Irons. The PB's were the Pro Trac irons, I can't quite remember. I wasn't on the launch monitor just hitting into the net, so I could really on get a grip on how the clubs each felt striking the ball. I thought the PB's and Calaway's felt similar, bith very nice. But the Cobra was noticably "softer" if that makes sense. I also hit the Cobra & Bertha drivers. I didn't really notice much of a difference between the clubs as far as feel goes. Visually though, the cobra looks like it wants to fight something with such an agressive styling of the club's topside. Acoustically, my ears were ringing after hitting the Cobra driver too. I don't know if it was awesome or embarassing it was that loud. But I was definately the focus of everyone else in the shop! The Bertha driver was also quite loud, just not deafening. I'm leaving the decision until this weekend. I've become quite friendly with one of the shop assistants there already and he always has time for me, along with great advice. He'll have me on the launch moniter to see if there is any real difference between the brands and get me fitted properly.

Both the Cobra & Callaway's were clubs I had in mind after doing some research and reading lots of reviews. So I'm glad they both came up as being suitable for me. I also like both the sets aesthetically. Which, as silly as it sounds, is important to me. I can't wait until the weekend and hope they don't take long to get made up!

aesthietics are never a trivial matter. confidence is a BIG part of golf and if you like what you see, how is that trivial?

yah, theres a new sound out there. its that pop. it wasn't you, its all over. i doubt they are much different, but i guess its important to some people to have a brand name recognized. dunno. its an ugly sound to me. i wont list the name brands. but i guess the ping of the first berthas was the same... 'ITS EVOLUTION BABY' (pj).

i forgot to address the reason i decided to reply

be careful of 'soft' clubs. i have a feeling you are want to go low eventually, and deep cavity-back clubs MIGHT restrict longterm improvement. if you want to go below bogey golf. if you don't, and just want to play well at your level, then 'soft' is the way to go i guess.

i hate not knowing why i missed.

I'd love to go low eventually, but I don't feelo any pressure to do so. Or to do so in a hurry. These clubs are what the computer spat out as being ideal for me at this point in time. I can always upgrade in the future if need be, and the bank agreeing!
