| Getting Back Hi Guys,
I'm Janz, a 30 year old duffer from Manila. I started playing golf when I was 26 but after almost a year of playing I went into hiatus because I got involved in motorcycle road racing. I planning to get back into the game caused I missed it so much.
I was wondering if I have to re-learn the swing because of the long break. When I was still playing my former golf pro told me that I should take this game seriously because I had a good swing and with a smooth relaxed putting stroke to match. I drove the ball over 280 yards on several occassions (is that a good average?) and even won a putting tournament sponsored by an equipment dealer here. But my problems occur on the second shots and mid shots, whether it be a fairway wood or iron.
Would it be hard to get back into form and fix my dreaded 2nd shots? What would you guys suggest?
Thanks in advance fellas. |

| Welcome aboard Ichthus Janz, always room for another duffer. Your driving stats are above average, 280 is one good drive by any standard. Second shots are the crux of any golfers game. I would suggest some serious practice with your 7/8/9/PW/GW/SW/LW....and of course the putter, those clubs are the scoring clubs. If your going to the range, start your practice with those clubs, not your driver, the driver should be maybe the last 10 minutes. As far as getting back into form, you may be rusty for 5 or 10 minutes then it'll all come back...Good Luck and let us know how you make out...

| Thanks for the reply 65nlovenit, I'll probably head out to the range next week and get this rusty machine oiled again...LOL.
I played a lot baseball in Little league and in College so that must have carried over to my golf swing. Your right the long and mid irons are really a problem to me and my only consolation is that when i get the ball to short grass I seldom three-putt it (that's if i get on the green in two strokes).
I got myself a loft 20 hybrid which work great for some second shots on par5s and long par4s. But I shank, skull and hit my irons fat most the time. Except my old Jack Nicklaus McGregor SW the irons are really a struggle. |

| I used to have a problem with anything bigger then an 8 iron, till I stopped trying to hit them a mile. I've adopted a 3/4 philosphy this year, don't hit any iron using more then a 3/4 swing. If I reach a point with a club where its at its max swing distance, I just use the next bigger club. Along with that I talk to myself just before I swing, "Relax, let the arms loosen up", ever since my iron game has improved ten fold. I dont hit it a mile, but I dont skull, shank or top my shot any more. Try it, it might work for you too...

| I finally got back to swinging the golf clubs again, and just this month I played in an amateur tournament which I carded 101 on a par 72 champioship which has some of the toughest holes in the country.
Didnt get any trophies but I was given a special mention for hitting the longest drive in the tournament. The ball carried over 310 yards hit cart path bounced thrice and rolled another 20 yards more, leaving just a close wedge to the flag.
That really got me to loving the game again. Will be playing in another tournament this April. Hopefully I'll be more cosistent with my irons. |
