| Welcome to a great game - if you wind up liking it that is!
If I were you, I'd look at the local Golf Galaxy or Golfer's Warehouse for some inexpensive clubs before paying out $$$ for "higher" caliber clubs. Thats just my opinion, others may say to invest right away. But until you know whether or not you'll want to stick with the game, an inexpensive set will at least allow you to take the diference in $$ and take some lessons - which, again, I wholeheartedly endorse.
Nicklaus has some inexpensive sets, as does Tiger Shark for women.... If you find you really enjoy it, you can upgrade when you're sure you want to stick with it.
BTW, if you want the "big name" clubs right off, I'd still look into the above stores at their used gear, sometimes you can get lucky. Just be sure to talk to someone - hopefully competent - about what you are getting and whether it suits a beginners game.
