I've been thinking about switching from my MacGregor Blades irons (getting old) to PING. I got fitted at a golf show and liked the I5's I was hitting. There is a set on Ebay that fit my specs, however they are steel shafts without the Cushin Inserts. I don't even know if the clubs I hit at the fitting had the insert or not.

Anybody have have any experience/opinion whether there is that much of a difference in feel or performance for a low single digit handicap player?

The inserts will not have any effect on the club other than to help dampen the vibration into your hands on miss hit shots.
I recently installed PRO SOFT INSERTS into my two sets of forged irons. Easy to do when it is time to re-grip your irons.
I just bought a set of COBRA FORGED CB's with Dynamic Gold Sensicore shafts. So no need to install the PRO SOFTS in those shafts.
You can easily install the Pro Softs, check the link I provided and go from there.
