New Irons???

Howdy,
I am new to this site and was hoping to pick a few brains. I am currently playing a forged Hogan Edge Iron set, 3-E that is approximately 18 - 20 years old. I've had these irons personally since 93 or 94, I can't remember. Anyway, I think it's time to get some new sticks in the bag. I have looked at the TM RAC, LT, HT, and OS. I also ran across a new set of TM r540 xd irons. They don't look to be that much different so I was hoping to find someone who has played both and can tell me if there is a great difference between the rac and the r540 xd. I have found the rac for $399 and the r540 xd for $200. So you can see my problem? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

In the Bag
Driver - Wilson Deep Red 9.5
3 Wood - Hogan Edge
Irons - 3-E Hogan Edge Forged
Putter - Odyssey 2 ball DFX
Ball - Titliest Pro V1

Hey Sir,
I think it's going to be unethical if each & everyone here will make a comment on the clubs.

As in why this is that club like this & that

I think whats best for you is to surf into their homesite, for example TaylorMade and find whats the difference between RAC & r540.

And then goto your trusted Golf shop and try hitting the clubs that you think are your preferences. Then buy them when you liked them.

I for one, have two sets and will be deciding which to retain later on.
Its pretty hard to just choose one set and play with it. I believe what's best is to have a multiple of irons and find the groove which works for you.

Most of our best Golfer here in my country carries 3 to 4 sets & hit them before the tournament starts.
When they feel that for example, r7 TP is their feel for the day, then they used it.

Hope this helps

Thanks

Thanks for you reply,
I've already hit both sets, and I can't really tell a difference. I was hoping that someone who has played both for sometime could give me an example of the differences, ie. playability, shot shaping, distance, etc. As far as I can tell the r540 xd has a thinner sole and looks a little more conventional at address which I like. As far as I can tell the only difference is asthetic.

Thanks

Sorry I missed this thread earlier...

I had the rac LT2 irons and liked them well enough. For a while, I also had a loaner set of the 540XD irons. The 540's were a specially manufactured set for ****'s Sporting Goods. They were not a professional set in the TaylorMade line.

That doesn't mean you might not like them. Personally, I was pleasantly surprised how good they felt and I didn't see a difference in my distance or ability to work them. To the extent I am capable of recognizing, I also felt they were made of good materials, nothing you wouldn't find in a top line club.

What you should be concerned about with the store line clubs is the consistancy of manufacture. The way I have always heard the story is that they might, (and I emphasize "might"), come up with a set that would be slightly off in the loft or lie, slightly longer or shorter than the perfect progression between clubs a higher priced set would have. The main issue should be the lofts since there is generally about a 3 degree difference between most irons. If you had a 5 iron with an extra degree of loft and a 6 iron with a degree less than it should, you would come pretty close to having a couple of identical irons in your bag.

That said, there are plenty of places that can measure lofts and lies and plenty of those places can adjust the clubs for you, within a tiny fraction. Unlike forged irons, the cast clubs can't be bent as much without breaking.

I suppose the biggest downside of buying the 540's would be replacing a club or finding other clubs to match. There won't be a selection of sand wedges or lob wedges or a 2 iron to match that set...

BTW - You can call TaylorMade and get all the info you want on the 540xd irons. They are very aware of them and are particularly happy to talk to anyone using their product.
