For father's day my wife is getting me a set of irons. But... although both feel good, I don't know which one to go with. I've been playing about 4 months now with some starter clubs and got 10+ extra yards on both clubs.
Go with the Callaways, more built in forgiveness, you'll probably get more yards out of the TaylorMade, but you being a newbie you need all the forgiveness you can find. Both are EXCELLENT sets of irons.
I agree, both are great irons sets. The R7s are a little longer, but the Callys are more forgiving, and are a little easier to work. I also find that the Callys produce higher RPMS, than the TMS.(For me at least) Really, that is what matters in an iron, not so much the distance, although it doesn't hurt. You can't go wrong with either! Just keep on testing them, and hopefully, it will be clear with what you should go with.
I'd go with the Callaways for forgiveness as well. Callaway irons are generally for players that struggle with iron shots. The R7 is for a player with a bit more skill.

Wow. Seems like the consensus is Callaway and I was leaning toward TaylorMades. I never played with either but have tried both out on the range and the store. I like both and just felt like I had more control of the club with the TMs yet hit the Callaways more consistently.
Of course, this is just at the driving range with a couple of balls and not ball after ball.
I'll test them out again and see. Maybe buy the Callaways where I have a 90 day return period.
Here is my take on your situation. Even though you haven't been playing too long, it seems to me like you are serious about improving. Both of these irons are what is in the 'player improvement category' with the Taylor Mades being bit more versatile. I honestly feel if you are serious about getting better, you should get the Taylor Mades to push yourself. The Callaways may end up acting a crutch holding you back.
I had a friend that took this route. He couldn't hit an iron for anything, so instead of getting a huge oversized set meant for someone who isn't that good, he got Cleveland true blades. These things are really small. His 9-iron is like most 4-irons, if not smaller.
Now he carries a 3 handicap and is one of the best iron players I know.

Yes, I do want to improve and want to do it as fast as I can. I have weekly lessons from the local golf pro and go to the driving range and putting greet at least 3-4 times a week with maybe a game every other week.
I was hitting my friends Calloway X20 6-iron pretty straight and gained 10+ yards on it which made me want to buy some clubs.
I currently play with the Nicklaus Signature V-18 and am happy with them but feel I can get more out of other clubs.
I got a Clevland Hibore XL driver for my birthday last week and have been hitting that better than the Nicklaus driver so I was very happy about that. I was timid at first swinging such a club but got into it pretty well.
Now I'm trying to decided on the two above sets and the Cobra S9.
Yeah, CB is right. If you are taking lessons, then you may want the R7s, since you are improving. The R7s do seem to be more versatle, tha nthe Callys, so you may want ot take that route. Or maybe you should hold off, and wait until those lessons start working, and you start to hit your irons well, then you could go out, and look at more advanced irons. That would probabaly do more for you in the long run.
edit: The S9s are good clubs too! But, again ,those are Game Improvemnet irons..if that's the route you want to take, then that's fine, but after time, you'll want something more workable, that has more options..that gets expensive quick!
i have the callaways and am an 8.6 handicap and i can hit these club a mile i think that this desision is very simple try the clubs which ever ones feel better get them each player has a unique swing wich means each player will get on better with different irons so just follow what you liek best and are most comfortable with amen x
