new iron set

Hi, iam new to the site and new to golf as it is my first year golfing. Right now, I am looking for a used set of irons on ebay for a few hundred $. I don't know if i want a steel or graphite shaft? Can someone tell me a few recommended sets that would do me good. I am about a 20 hdcp. I found a set of Ping G5's on ebay that might work. I am also left-handed. Thanks! Jake

Just a considerations Jake, if your a walker, graphite is definitely lighter to lug around, and maybe slightly better yardage distances.

The G5's would work just fine. Actually, almost any casted cavity back would do. You might also look for a set of Tommy Armour 845's on Ebay. You can buy them for almost nothing. This is amazing since they are considered classics in terms of design and playability. I would suggest starting off with steel shafts. Better feedback to your hands so you can feel what you're doing right and doing wrong.
Concentrate on developing a good swing with a good swing routine. Learning how to hit a ball correctly is more important than what you will be hitting it with. The best investment you could make, in my opinion, would be a copy of Ben Hogan's Five Lessons. Best of Luck.
