Lightbulb John Daly - Golf Profile

Birthdate: April 28, 1966
Nationality: American
Turned Professional: 1987
Current Tour: PGA

Background:

Big “D” , or “The Lion” as he is know in the golfing world, has won the affection of fans and colleagues alike, due to his unorthodox, rough and tumble approach to the game and to life. Although he started playing golf at the age of four, Daly also was involved in baseball and football until his final year of high school. He continued to play golf in college (University of Arkansas), turning professional in 1987. He has garnered a reputation for problems with drinking and gambling and has been in and out of treatment programs several times throughout the years. Recently, he published a “tell all” autobiography entitled: “My Life in and out of the Rough, The Truth Behind All That Bull**** You Think You Know About Me, to dispel rumors and shed light on how he has weathered the storms to re-gain footing in his career. Daly enjoys playing his guitar, writing music, and working with charities, including the “Make-A-Wish” Foundation and the Boys & Girls Club of America. He has also recently developed “The Lion”, a line of golf apparel for the ‘rest of us’, has started a wine label and has developed the signature course at Thundering Waters, Niagra Falls, Ontario, Canada. Keep on eye out for him on the road – he prefers to travel to tournaments by RV (personal recreational vehicle) – and not fly.

Professional Career Bio:

Joining the PGA Tour in 1991, John Daly made his first mark on the game of golf by winning the PGA Championship during his first year, even though he was not originally scheduled to compete. Not to be shaken by his lucky break, Daly scored 67-69-71, and was named PGA Rookie of the Year, and was the first rookie to win a major title since 1976. His unorthodox, giant backswing continued to treat him well, and in 1995 Daly won the British Open. He also holds the distinction of being the only two-time major winner never to be selected for the Ryder Cup. Daly is also an eleven time, record setting winner of the Driving Distance contest, with a lifetime average off the tee of 309.4 yards (single personal best is 314.3 yds). This ability to reach long, par 5 holes in 2 strokes, combined with his gentle touch on the green is the key to his game.
