Top 15 to compete in HSBC Women's event

The top 15 women's golfers in the world will tee up in the inaugural HSBC Women's Champions in Singapore later this month.

The £2.3 million tournament takes place on the Garden Course at the Tanah Merah Country Club from February and will mark the seasonal re-appearance of world number one Lorena Ochoa.

The Mexican will face stiff competition from former number one Annika Sorenstam of Sweden and a host of LPGA stars, including world number three Karrie Webb of Australia and 2007 LPGA Rolex Rookie of the Year Angela Park.

Brazilian-born to Korean parents, Park is anxious to build on her achievements last year. "The HSBC Women's Champions is going to be a tough event with so many top players competing. I will give it my best and in four days of stroke play, anything can happen."

Ochoa to debut in Singapore for HSBC Women's Champions

SINGAPORE (Reuters) - World number one Lorena Ochoa will headline the inaugural $2 million HSBC Women's Champions tournament in Singapore next month, organizers said on Friday.

Mexican Ochoa, who has garnered 17 wins on the LPGA Tour and won the last two Player of the Year awards, said the LPGA-sanctioned event gave her the chance to kick off the 2008 season in style.

"I am excited about playing in Singapore for the first time and I think the HSBC Women's Champions will be a great event on the LPGA Tour," Ochoa said in a news release.

"I have heard lots of good things about the Garden Course and I am very keen to get my 2008 season off to a strong start so I hope I can put in a good performance next month."

Ochoa leads HSBC Women's Champions by 7 strokes after second round

SINGAPORE: World No. 1 Lorena Ochoa fired a near flawless 7-under 65 on Friday to increase her lead in the HSBC Women's Champions tournament to seven strokes after two rounds.

"It was great from my driver to the putting. I kept hitting my second shots really close and gave myself a lot of birdie chances, so I was very consistent," Ochoa said.

Ochoa fired eight birdies — including four in succession on the front nine — and conceded one bogey to finish with a 13-under 131 two-round total at the Tanah Merah Country Club.

Ochoa extends lead at HSBC Women's Champions

Singapore (Sports Network) - Lorena Ochoa posted a three-under 69 on Saturday to extend her lead to eight shots after the third round of the HSBC Women's Champions event.

The world No. 1 and reigning two-time Player of the Year finished 54 holes at 16-under-par 200 at Tanah Merah Country Club.

This is the first year of the tournament and even though Ochoa has a seemingly insurmountable lead, the final threesome will be a strong one. Paula Creamer and Annika Sorenstam, the only winners thus far in the 2008 season, each shot rounds of two-under 70 and are knotted in second at minus-eight.

"There's no doubt that it's a tough test," acknowledged Sorenstam. "Lorena is playing some great golf, but you just have to continue to believe in your own game."

Karrie Webb also carded a 70 on Saturday and is alone in fourth at seven-under 209. Laura Diaz shot a 70 as well and has fifth to herself at five-under-par 211.

Ochoa, making her 2008 LPGA Tour debut, began the third round with a seven- shot cushion. She parred her first three holes and Sorenstam closed the gap to five with birdies at two and three.

Ochoa crushes HSBC Women's Champions field

SINGAPORE (AP) — Mexico's Lorena Ochoa set herself for another banner year in 2008 after dominating the HSBC Women's Champions event, completing an 11-stroke victory on Sunday.

Ochoa fired another four birdies for a 4-under 68 round and a total of 20-under 268, sending a message to placegetters Annika Sorenstam and Paula Creamer — plus any others eyeing off her No. 1 ranking — that she was not about to rest on 2007's laurels.

"I learned a lot, and I took my game to a new level, so I'm going to keep trying to repeat myself," Ochoa said. "There are a lot of birdies out there, and hopefully I'll have great rounds this year."
