Singapore (Sports Network) - Lorena Ochoa posted a three-under 69 on Saturday to extend her lead to eight shots after the third round of the HSBC Women's Champions event.
The world No. 1 and reigning two-time Player of the Year finished 54 holes at 16-under-par 200 at Tanah Merah Country Club.
This is the first year of the tournament and even though Ochoa has a seemingly insurmountable lead, the final threesome will be a strong one. Paula Creamer and Annika Sorenstam, the only winners thus far in the 2008 season, each shot rounds of two-under 70 and are knotted in second at minus-eight.
"There's no doubt that it's a tough test," acknowledged Sorenstam. "Lorena is playing some great golf, but you just have to continue to believe in your own game."
Karrie Webb also carded a 70 on Saturday and is alone in fourth at seven-under 209. Laura Diaz shot a 70 as well and has fifth to herself at five-under-par 211.
Ochoa, making her 2008 LPGA Tour debut, began the third round with a seven- shot cushion. She parred her first three holes and Sorenstam closed the gap to five with birdies at two and three.
