International Stars Highlight Sybase Classic Field

An elite field for the Sybase® Classic presented by ShopRite has been finalized as the deadline for player registration has passed. Two-time defending champion Lorena Ochoa looks for a three-peat, as Annika Sorenstam, Karrie Webb, Ai Miyazato, Morgan Pressel, and many other stars of the LPGA Tour compete at Upper Montclair Country Club, May 15 – 18.
“We are excited to see such a stellar field at this year’s Sybase Classic,” said John Chen, chairman, CEO and president of Sybase, Inc. “We look forward to some exciting golf with some of the world’s greatest players.”
Last year’s Sybase Classic victory by Ochoa marked her first win since she passed Sorenstam for first on the Rolex Women’s World Golf Rankings. It also sparked a record-setting year in which she won $4,364,994 with eight victories. Ochoa has continued her success into 2008 with a recent four in-a-row win streak and five titles in seven starts.
Sorenstam is perhaps the most decorated female golfer of all-time. She has won 71 events in her career, including 10 major championships and has earned nearly $22 million, the most in LPGA Tour history. She has had success before at the annual Tri-state event. She is a two-time champion (1998 and 2000) from when the event was held at Wykagyl Country Club in New Rochelle, New York.
Australian Webb, the fifth-ranked golfer in the world, also returns. The LPGA Tour and World Golf Halls of Famer is a 35-time champion.
Miyazato leads the influx of Asian stars participating in the Sybase Classic. The youngster has won 14 international events in her career and is experiencing success on the LPGA Tour since joining in 2006. She will be joined by South Korean sensation Seon Hwa Lee and Taiwanese rookie Yani Tseng, who is currently fourth on the 2008 Official Money List.
Teenage phenom Pressel leads the cast of rising American stars that will compete. She is the youngest major champion in Tour history and is already the 14th-ranked female golfer in the world since turning professional in 2006. 2007 Evian Masters champion Natalie Gulbis will also compete.

Second-round play was suspended due to unplayable course conditions. Friday's scores were erased. The tournament is now a 54-hole event. Play begins anew on Saturday morning using Friday's tee times.

Farewell tour starts strong

The Annika Sorenstam goodbye tour got off to a great start.

Two days after announcing this would be her final season on the LPGA Tour, Sorenstam shot a 5-under-par 67 on Thursday for a share of the first-round lead in the Sybase Classic in Clifton, N.J. Two-time defending champion Lorena Ochoa was a stroke back.

The 37-year-old Hall of Famer came into the $2 million tournament off a dominating seven-stroke victory in the Michelob Ultra Open last weekend, and she was just as good getting around the Upper Montclair Country Club course in the shadow of New York City. The Swede had five birdies in a bogey-free round.

"I'm just very happy the way I'm playing," said Sorenstam, who has three victories this year after failing to win in an injury-marred 2007 season. "I worked really hard this winter and it's all coming together. My swing feels really good and my putting feels really good. This is the way I enjoy the game. It's fairways and greens."

Song-Hee Kim, a second-year player from South Korea who has two top-10 finishes this year, also was at 67 along with Australia's Rachel Hetherington, who has missed three of eight cuts and finished no better than a tie for 24th this year.

The leaderboard was crowded after the first day of the 72-hole event. Ochoa, a five-time winner this year, was at 68 along with Pat Hurst, Catriona Matthew, Brittany Lang, Teresa Lu and Carolina Llano.

U.S. Women's Open champion Cristie Kerr was in another big group at 69.

But the day and, really the week, has belonged to Sorenstam, seeking her third straight victory. She won the Stanford International Pro-Am on April 27 in a playoff with Paula Creamer, then took a week off before winning last week at Kingsmill.

Delasin survives, Rosales cut again in Sybase Classic

Dorothy Delasin finished with her second even-par- round of 72 after rain washed out play last Saturday in the Sybase Classic presented by ShopRite at the Upper Montclair Country Club in the shadow of New York City and was in 32nd position going into the final round in the event that has been cut short to 54 holes.

Her World Cup winning partner Jennifer Rosales finished with a five-over-par 77 to go with her opening round even-par-72 and failed to make the cut for the second week in a row. Delasin had also failed to make the cut alongside Rosales in the previous weekends Michelob Ultra Open in Williamsburg, Virginia.

Mexico’s Lorena Ochoa who is No.1 on the tour at this stage made her move to grab top stop on the leaderboard with a 5-under-par 67 which, coupled with her opening round 68, gave her a two-day total of 9-under-par 135,

A third straight win at the Sybase Classic, Ochoa could become the first player since Annika Sorenstam in 2005 to win the same tournament three consecutive times. Sorenstam who showed the way at the end of the first round with a 5-under-par 67 just two days after announcing her retirement at the end of the LPGA season fired a one-over-par 73 and dropped to seventh place, five shots behind Ochoa.

Teresa Lu and Sophia Gustafson currently share second place at 7-under 137 and will join Ochoa off the first tee in the final round of the rain-shortened 54 hole event.

Delasin had her big moment when she turned in an eagle on the par four, 16th hole after an earlier birdie on the 11th but it all went to waste with bogeys on the 9th, 14th and 17th holes which put her nine shots off the lead.

Ochoa wins third consecutive LPGA Sybase title

World number one Lorena Ochoa of Mexico won her sixth title of the year here Sunday, firing a one-under par 71 to capture the LPGA Sybase Classic for the third year in a row.

Two weeks after her four-event LPGA win streak was snapped, Ochoa captured the 300,000-dollar top prize at the two million-dollar tournament with a 54-hole total of 10-under par 206, one stroke ahead of five rivals.

The tournament was shortened to three rounds after heavy rain swamped the course Friday, prompting officials to throw out the few scores that had been posted and start the second round anew on Saturday.

South Korea's Na Yeon Choi, Britain's Catriona Matthew, Sweden's Sophie Gustafson and Americans Brittany Lang and Morgan Pressel shared second on 207.

Despite her sparkling record this season, Ochoa had struggled in her previous two events, finishing fifth at the SemGroup Championship and tied for 12th at last weekend's Michelob Ultra Open.

"It feels so good to have defended my title," said Ochoa.
