Background:
Michael Richard Weir is a graduate of Brigham Young University where he majored in Recreation Management. In his earlier years, he wrote a letter to Jack Nicklaus, asking advice on his swing and whether he should switch his swing to improve his game. Nicklaus responded, “Swing natural.” In addition to golf, Weir is a fan of professional hockey, and has participated in practices and other events with NHL players. He is a personal friend of Adam Oates (center for the Edmonton Oilers). He lives in Draper, Utah with his wife and two daughters.
Professional Career Bio:
Several factors combine to make Mike Weir one of the most unique players on the PGA Tour. Weir was the first Canadian to win a PGA Tour event in Canada in over 45 years, and he was the first Canadian ever to win a professional major and only the second left handed golfer to win one of the four majors (Weir is right handed, but plays as a lefty).
Though his first PGA win came in 1999 (Air Canada Championship), Weir’s most prestigious win was at the 2003 Masters at Augusta National. In June of 2003, he tied for 3rd at the U.S. Open. His 2003 season brought him to 5th place on the money list and over $4.8 million in prize money, both career bests. His excellent play at both of these great events earned him Lou Marsh Award for outstanding Canadian athlete. During this time, he ranked in the top 3 of the Official World Golf Rankings. Weir continued his streak of excellence in 2004, making a second year win at the 2004 Nissan Open – only the 20th player to do so at this tournament. A nagging injury in 2005, had Weir slipping down the ranks and led to a disappointing season. He rebounded in 2006 with four top ten wins, pushing him over the $1 million earnings mar.
