The Nationwide Tour flies across the Pacific Ocean to Christchurch, New Zealand this week for the HSBC New Zealand PGA Championship, the first of two events Down Under. For the seventh year in a row, the Nationwide Tour and the PGA Tour of Australasia have partnered to host events in New Zealand and Australia that feature 156-player fields divided evenly with 78 players from both tours.

FINGAL, Australia - Australia's Ewan Porter shot a 5-under-par 67 on a wind-swept course Thursday to take a one-stroke lead over American Fran Quinn at the Moonah Classic.

Fabian Gomez of Argentina and American Chris Kirk were tied for third after 69s in the joint Nationwide-Australasian PGA tour event.

Americans Matthew Every and Tee McCabe, and Australian Paul Sheehan were among a group of seven tied for fifth with 70s, many of them with early-morning starts when the wind was blowing its hardest on the Peter Thomson-designed Moonah Links course on the Mornington Peninsula outside Melbourne.

Only 20 golfers in the 156-man field broke par.

BEING a full-time father is a far more satisfying job description for Paul Marantz than part-time pro golfer. For a start, it's more fun and less pressure.

But it doesn't pay the bills like a healthy prizemoney cheque.

The father of two posted a first-round two-under 70 at the Moonah Classic yesterday to be three shots behind leader Ewan Porter.

The 37-year-old from Sanctuary Cove on Queensland's Gold Coast is competing in stark contrast to most of the players from the Australasian and Nationwide tours, who agonise over miscued drives and misjudged putts as they try to get on to the lucrative US PGA Tour next year.

"It's just a bit of fun for me, so I'm probably a bit more relaxed than most of the guys out here," Marantz said.

FINGAL, Australia -- Ewan Porter fired a 1-under-par 71 on Saturday to move into sole possession of the lead with just 18 holes remaining at the Moonah Classic. The tournament is co-sanctioned by the Nationwide Tour and PGA Tour of Australasia.

Porter, a 25-year-old native of Cronulla, Australia, entered the day with a share of the lead but moved out front on his own at 7-under 209 -- one shot clear of fellow Aussies Wayne Perske (72) and Terry Price (70).

"I hit the ball very solid all day," said Porter, who hit 10 of 14 fairways and 14 of 18 greens in regulation. "I feel very comfortable with my golf swing. Every part of my game feels really solid right now."

The round almost never happened for Porter. He battled a stiff neck and shoulder throughout the round -- a result of pre-round workout -- but managed to make it through the day without any further damage.

"I was here about 7:00 this morning trying to loosen up," said Porter. "I don't usually do that. I usually would go mid-morning when my body wasn't so stiff. It was really bad. I was so close to withdrawing. I was devastated. My goal was just to tee it up. But it was probably a blessing in disguise because it took pressure off of me thinking what all was at stake."

FINGAL, Australia -- Australian Ewan Porter grabbed the lead of the Moonah Classic on Thursday and never looked back. He held at least a share of the lead in all four rounds and then cruised to victory Sunday in the event co-sanctioned by the Nationwide Tour and the PGA Tour of Australasia.

The 25-year-old native of Cronulla fired a final-round 6-under 66 to finish 13-under 275, seven strokes ahead of Americans D.J. Brigman (70) and Tee McCabe (71). The winning gap equals the third largest in Tour history -- eclipsed only by Chris Smith's 11-stroke win at the 1997 Omaha Classic and Chris Nallen's eight-shot victory at the 2004 Gila River Golf Classic.

"I'm over the moon right now," said Porter, who hit 10 of 14 fairways and 14 of 18 greens in regulation in his final round. "Under the circumstances, it was the round of my life."

While some predicted nerves might come into play for Porter during the final round, he was anything but unsteady. After a par on the opening hole, Porter notched three consecutive birdies on Nos. 2-4 to leave little doubt of the final outcome. Insurance birdies were added on Nos. 11 and 12 to build the lead to five shots at the time.
