Three tied for lead on Day 1 at windy WNB Golf Classic

The City of Midland earned its name because it was midway between Fort Worth and El Paso on the Texas and Pacific railroad. There were no "middlin'" performances from Spencer Levin, Tom Gillis and Reid Edstrom on Thursday, and they share the lead after the opening round of the WNB Golf Classic at the Midland Country Club.

Leishman leads by three at halfway in WNB Classic

The taller players were head and shoulders above the rest on Friday in the "Tall City" -- Midland's official nickname since the city skyline towers above the plains -- in the second round of the WNB Golf Classic.

Marc Leishman, the 6-foot-2 Australian, posted a bogey-free 6-under 66 to lead at 11-under 133 after 36 holes.

Brendon Todd (68) is tied for second at 8 under with Tom Gillis (70), Spencer Levin (70) and Michael Boyd (67).

Michael Putnam (67) and Ricky Barnes (68), the bubble boy at 25th on the money list, are tied for sixth at 7 under.

Won Joon Lee (69) is alone in eighth at 6 under while three players are tied for ninth at 5 under, including money leader, Brendon de Jonge (68). Overnight co-leader Reid Edstrom (75) dropped back into a tie for 15th.

Leishman extends lead to five at WNB Golf Classic

The "Friday Night Lights" of the Permian Basin were shining on Marc Leishman Friday night and the Australian continued to shine in Saturday's third round of the WNB Golf Classic at Midland Country Club, shooting 6-under 66 for a 17-under-par 199 total and taking a five-shot lead into the final round.

Leishman earns first victory in a very big way

The Permian Basin produces one-fifth of the nation's total petroleum and natural gas output. On Sunday, for the 10th time in 17 WNB Golf Classics, the Basin produced another first-time winner on the Nationwide Tour.

Australia's Marc Leishman (68) blew the field away with a stellar performance during an extremely windy week, when 35-mph gusts occurred regularly at the Midland Country Club, shooting an incredible 21-under-par 267 and equaling the Nationwide Tour's largest margin of victory of 11 shots held by Chris Smith (1997 Omaha Classic).

The tournament record of 24 under was threatened when Leishman reached 23 under with four holes to play, but bogeys at 15 and 18 halted his progress.

Dallas resident Keoke Cotner (68) finished alone in second at 10-under 278, his best performance of the year. Jacksonville, Fla., resident and fellow Australian Aron Price (72) finished third at 9-under 279.
