American duo holds lead in OMEGA Mission Hills World Cup

SHENZHEN, China (AP) -- The American duo of Boo Weekley and Heath Slocum held on to a one-stroke lead in the OMEGA Mission Hills World Cup shooting a 3-under 69 in Friday's second round to lead England and Scotland.

England's Justin Rose and Ian Poulter, and Scotland's Colin Montgomerie and Marc Warren both shot 68 to trail by a shot on 13-under 131. The South African team of Trevor Immelman and Retief Goosen were another shot back after a 69. Three teams were three behind -- Denmark (68), Italy (68) and Germany (71).

After a low-scoring day Thursday in the easier better-ball format, scores soared in Friday alternate-shot play at the Mission Hills Golf Club in southern China. Though this is a stroke-play event, match-play rules are in force.

Weekley, Slocum keep the World Cup lead for the United States

SHENZHEN, China (AP) -- Boo Weekley and Heath Slocum of the United States held their lead at the World Cup of Golf on Saturday.

The American duo shot a 6-under 66 on Saturday, giving them a one-stroke lead over France (62) and Scotland (66) going into Sunday's final round of the OMEGA World Cup at the Mission Hills Golf Club in southern China.

They're on 20-under 196 and have led by one stroke after all three rounds.

Scores dipped on a warm, sun-drenched Saturday with teams playing the easier fourballs (better-ball) format. Sunday will be tougher playing foursomes (alternate-shot) in what is still a stroke-play event.

South Africa (66) and England (67) were two strokes off the lead. Argentina (64), the Netherlands (65) and Germany (66) were three behind.

Weekley and Slocum said they struggled all day with firm greens, tough pin placements and a swirling wind. In addition, neither made many putts. The exception was Weekley's eagle-3 on No. 3, where he hit a 4-iron to 15 feet and then dropped the uphill putt.

Montgomerie-Warren pairing gives Scotland first victory in event

SHENZHEN, China -- Add the World Cup of Golf to Colin Montgomerie's long resumé.

Montgomerie and Marc Warren gave Scotland its first victory in the World Cup, defeating Americans Boo Weekley and Heath Slocum on Sunday with a par on the third hole of a playoff in southern China.

The victory at the Mission Hills Golf Club made up for Scotland's loss last year in Barbados on the first hole of a playoff with Germany's Bernhard Langer and Marcel Siem.

Montgomerie's tap-in for par on the third extra hole was good enough for the Scots when Weekley missed a 15-foot attempt to save par.

"It's been a long time for Scotland to win the World Cup, since 1953," said Montgomerie, an eight-time European No. 1. "There was pressure to come back after a playoff loss like we did last year, which was disappointing."
