Lickliter, de Jonge shoot 62s to top q-school leaderboard

WINTER GARDEN, Fla. (AP) -- Frank Lickliter II and Brendon de Jonge shot 10-under 62s on Wednesday at Orange County National to share the first-round lead in the six-round PGA TOUR National Qualifying Tournament.

The top 25 finishers and ties will earn 2008 PGA TOUR cards, while the next number of players nearest 50 will get full Nationwide Tour exemptions. The remaining players in the 166-man field will receive conditional Nationwide Tour status.

The 38-year-old Lickliter, a two-time winner on the TOUR, had 10 birdies -- six in a row on Nos. 2-7 -- on the Panther Lake course. De Jonge, from Zimbabwe, had two eagles and six birdies in his bogey-free round, also at Panther Lake.

Lickliter finished 139th on the money list this year, and de Jonge was 155th.

Brett Rumford and Jason Allred shot 66s on the Crooked Cat course, and Matthew Every and David Lutterus opened with 66s at Panther Lake.

Harrison Frazar, Bob Heintz, Todd Demsey, Travis Perkins, D.H. Lee, D.A. Points, Matt Hansen and Tommy Gainey shot 67s, while four-time tour winner Carlos Franco topped a group at 68 that included Ted Purdy, Jim McGovern and Gavin Coles.

Lickliter shoots second 62, takes 9-stroke lead in q-school

WINTER GARDEN, Fla. (AP) -- Frank Lickliter II shot his second straight 10-under 62 on Thursday at Orange County National to take a nine-stroke lead after the second of six rounds in the PGA TOUR National Qualifying Tournament.

The top 25 finishers and ties will earn 2008 PGA TOUR cards, while the next number of players nearest 50 will get full Nationwide Tour exemptions. The remaining players in the 166-man field will receive conditional Nationwide Tour status.

The 38-year-old Lickliter, a two-time winner on the TOUR, had an eagle, nine birdies and a bogey on the Crooked Cat course. On Wednesday, he had 10 birdies on the Panther Lake course.

His 20-under 124 total is the lowest two-round score in the event since the TOUR began keeping such statistics in 1992. Tommy Tolles had the previous best, playing 36 holes in 16-under 128 in 2000.

Zimbabwe's Brendon de Jonge (71) and Jason Allred (67) were second at 11 under. De Jonge played at Crooked Cat, and Allred at Panther Lake.

Alejandro Canizares (62), Jim McGovern (66) and Travis Perkins (67) were 10 under. They all played at Panther Lake.

Final-stage q-school: Fourth-round notebook

• Frank Lickliter carded a fourth-round 72 in the PGA TOUR's Qualifying Tournament on Saturday and now holds a three-shot lead over Nationwide Tour player Jason Allred with two rounds left to play.

• Frank Lickliter's 72-hole total of 24-under 264 is the second lowest 72-hole total at the PGA TOUR Qualifying Tournament since 1992, when the TOUR began keeping such statistics. Andrew McLardy holds the lowest four-round total when he stood at 27-under 261 in 2000.

• The last time a fourth-round leader/co-leader at the PGA TOUR Qualifying Tournament went on to win was in 2003 when Mathias Gronberg eventually won by a single stroke.

• Since the PGA TOUR began keeping such statistics in 1992, the 72-hole leader/co-leader at the PGA TOUR Qualifying Tournament has never failed to secure his card.

• Frank Lickliter II and Chris Stroud are the only players currently in the top 10 who were full members of the PGA TOUR in 2007.

• Tarheel Tour player Tommy "Two Gloves" Gainey, who gained national fame on GOLF CHANNEL's "Big Break" series, shot 71 on Saturday and is tied for fourth going into Sunday's fifth round. Gainey was able to survive a double-bogey on the par-4 11th in which he had to get up-and-down for a six on Saturday.

• The projected 108-hole cutoff number for PGA TOUR cards (based on 72-hole numbers) is 15-under par.

• Brett Rumford is one of three players from the Australasian PGA Tour who gained an exemption into the final stage of q-school based on his money-list standing (Rumford, Jarrod Lyle, Wade Ormsby). Through four rounds, Rumford has carded rounds of 66-70-68-65--269 and finds himself in solo third.

• Former Walker Cup star and Coastal Carolina University All-America selection Dustin Johnson finds himself inside the number through 72 holes with rounds of 72-67-67-70--276. A total of three members of the victorious 2007 United States Walker Cup team are in the field this week: Dustin Johnson 72-67-67-70--276 T12; Colt Knost 75-70-72-68--285 T97; Chris Kirk 71-73-70-73--287 T118.

• After the first two rounds this week, the field was split in half based on 36-hole scores. Of the players who began their third rounds in the lower half, Bob May has made the best move with rounds of 69-73-68-67--277 and currently sits tied for 15th. Conversely, the player who began in the upper half and fell the farthest in the last two rounds was 2007 Nationwide Tour player John Kimbell, whose rounds of 70-70-76-75--291 have him tied for 149th with 36 holes left to play.

Lickliter takes care of business at q-school

WINTER GARDEN, Fla. -- In the first round of the 2007 PGA TOUR National Qualifying Tournament, Frank Lickliter made six consecutive birdies en route to a 62.

On the seventh hole in that stretch, which was really the par-4 eighth hole on the Panther Lake Course, Lickliter hit a 4-iron right at the pin and watched his 35-foot birdie try lip out of the hole.

"I turned to one of the caddies and said, 'Can you believe that didn't go in?!'" Lickliter recalled later.

He went on to birdie Nos. 10 and 11 then added birdies on the 16th and 18th holes as well.

"The last seven holes I played in 2 under, so as far as 62s go it was pretty easy. If I could have made three more in a row then we are talking a 57 or 58."

That's the kind of day -- and ultimately week -- Lickliter was having. Everything seemed to go his way. Not only did he wind up shooting 62 during the first round of the six-day tournament, he followed that up with a 62 in the second round as well.
