| Torrey pine-fresh smell greets players for Buick Back in the summer of 2006, Mark Woodward walked the Black Course of Bethpage State Park and was struck by the condition of New York's famous public golf course.
In Bethpage Black, Woodward, the city of San Diego's golf manager, saw a state-owned course that successfully hosted the U.S. Open in 2002 and will host again in 2009. With the U.S. Open due at the city owned-Torrey Pines South Course in 2008, Woodward was struck by the top condition that Bethpage Superintendent Craig Currier and course manager Dave Catalano had the Black Course in at the time.
Woodward came up with a catch phrase that he uses often these days. It was time to “raise the bar” at Torrey Pines, where having the course ready for public play is as important as having it be a test for Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson. Complete article |

| PGA caddie killed at Buick Invitational Steve Duplantis, a popular PGA Tour caddie known for bringing out the best in players, was killed early Wednesday when he was struck by a taxi while crossing a street.
Duplantis was in Del Mar when he stepped off a centre median and into the path of a taxi, said Sgt. Randy Webb of the San Diego Sheriff's Department. The 35-year-old Duplantis was pronounced dead on the scene.
He was working at the Buick Invitational for Eric Axley.
A spirit after hours and regarded among the best caddies inside the ropes, he previously won four times with Jim Furyk early in his career, with Rich Beem at the Kemper Open and with Tommy Armour III when he set the PGA Tour scoring record at the Texas Open in 2003.
Axley was not immediately available for comment, and several other players for whom Duplantis worked were playing the pro-am Wednesday at Torrey Pines.
The mood was somber on the putting green, where some caddies were waiting on their players.
"He was a throwback," caddie Patrick Smith said. "He raised the level of every player he worked for. He could take guys who were marginal and they would play well."
Duplantis and his nightlife exploits were prominently featured in a book titled, Bud, Sweat and Tees, a story primarily about Beem.
"Regardless of his reputation, he was a great caddie and didn't have a bad bone in him," caddie Mark Chaney said. |

| Woods, Mickelson Tee Off at Buick Invitational World No. 1 golfer Tiger Woods of the United States and second-ranked Phil Mickelson lead the field when the Buick Invitational tournament tees off Thursday outside San Diego, California.
Woods will be looking for a fourth consecutive Buick title this week. The world No. 1 has won this event five times, including the last three tournaments.
This tournament is also Tiger's first appearance on the 2008 PGA Tour. In his 11 season-opening events, Woods has won five times and has never finished out of the top 10. Complete article |

| The Buick Invitational welcomes the young guns Tiger Woods calls him Marko.
That's Mark O'Meara, who became Woods' close friend and unofficial mentor when the precocious 19-year-old burst onto the scene in 1996. With Woods now firmly entrenched as the No. 1 player in the game, though, O'Meara has moved on. Complete article |

| Woods begins task of running table in 2008 majors Tiger Woods knows he's setting the bar high.
As he looked forward to the 2008 season on his website, Woods said that the calendar year Grand Slam is "easily within reason" this year. And it's hard to argue with the No. 1 player in the game.
After all, he's won five times, including the last three straight, at Torrey Pines, which hosts the Buick Invitational this week and the U.S. Open in June. Woods' success at Augusta National is well-documented and well-worn in those four Green Jackets, size 42-long.
And the last time the Open Championship was contested at Royal Birkdale, as it will be again in July, a 22-year-old Woods finished one stroke out of the playoff between his buddy Mark O'Meara and journeyman Brian Watts.
Is it any wonder so many think the stars have aligned this year to give Woods the opportunity to be the first to win the traditional, modern-day Grand Slam? complete article |

| Tiger Leads Buick Invitational by 4 American Tiger Woods holds a four-shot lead heading into Saturday's third round of the Buick Invitational golf tournament at the Torrey Pines course in San Diego, California.
Woods shot a 7-under-par 65 in playing on Torrey Pines's North Course. He overcame several shaky drives off the tee, making par on his first three holes before racking up seven birdies for the day. The world's No.1 golfer is seeking his fourth consecutive Buick win, and the sixth of his career.
American rookie Kevin Streelman is in second place after shooting a 69 on the more difficult South Course. Streelman was a third alternate who was tapped to play at the last minute before Thursday's opening round.
American Stewart Cink enters today's round in third place, while Australian Aaron Baddeley is tied for fourth with Americans Boo Weekley and Brad Adamonis. |

| Woods powers to dominant victory at Buick Invitational Tiger Woods fired a one-under par 71 on Sunday to win the 5.2 million-dollar Buick Invitational by eight shots over Japan's Ryuji Imada.
Woods, who started the day with a commanding eight-stroke lead, finished with a 19-under total of 269 to claim his fourth straight and sixth career title at this event.
Woods wasted no time Sunday morning in extending his lead, opening with a birdie at the first hole that gave him a nine-shot cushion. He stretched his lead to 10 with a birdie at the sixth.
Imada had one of the best rounds of a rainy day, his 67 catapulting him from a tie for eighth at the start of the day to second at 11-under 277.
"My goal going into today was to finish second, and you know, that's almost like winning the golf tournament to me," Imada said. "With Tiger having an eight-shot lead or whatever there was pretty much no chance for me to catch him." Complete article |
