| Woods among those to again forgo opener in Kapalua THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. -- With another trophy in hand, Tiger Woods is taking another big break.
Woods said he would not start his 2008 season until he defends his title in the Buick Invitational, making it the third consecutive year he has skipped the winners-only Mercedes-Benz Championship at Kapalua.
Woods, who won at Kapalua in 2000 and has never finished lower than a tie for eighth, said he wanted to spend time at home over the next five weeks before gearing up for the new season.
"I enjoy that time off,'' he said after winning the Target World Challenge, his first event after a 10-week break. "Kapalua does a fantastic job, and I've played well out there. I just enjoy the time at home with my family.'' Complete article |

| 008 Mercedes-Benz Championship: ’I’m prepared’ 2008 Mercedes-Benz Championship: ’I’m prepared’
By ROBERT COLLIAS, Staff Writer
KAPALUA – There are seven flags flying at the entrance to the Kapalua Plantation Course, each featuring a previous winner of the Mercedes-Benz Championship.
The 10th event starts today with only two of those men – defending champion Vijay Singh and 2001 winner Jim Furyk – in the field.
Singh, with top-eight finishes all eight times he has played on Maui, comes in tied with Furyk for the most experience on the Plantation Course among the 31 players in the field. Furyk is second in top-10s, with five.
Missing are Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Padraig Harrington and Adam Scott, four of the top eight players in the world rankings. Complete article |

| Weir Leads Mercedes-Benz Championship KAPALUA, Hawaii (AP) — Kapalua might consider changing its logo to a Maple Leaf this week. Mike Weir of Canada, who only 10 weeks ago qualified for the winners-only Mercedes-Benz Championship with his first victory in more than three years, made an 18-foot birdie putt on the final hole for a 6-under 67 in much more agreeable conditions Friday for a one-shot lead over Stephen Ames and Jonathan Byrd.
Ames, the only player in the field who actually lives in Canada, fixed a flaw in his putting stroke and also shot 67, making birdie on three of his last five holes despite missing a 6-footer along the way.
Weir, raised in Bright's Grove, Ontario, now lives in Utah and played only one full round of golf last month when he went to San Diego to check on equipment. Ames was born in Trinidad & Tobago and moved to Calgary in 1991, becoming a naturalized citizen in 2003. He hasn't played since winning the Skins Game, and during his 10-day vacation on Maui, only played 18 holes over two days with his sons.
And here they are on an island in the Pacific, their names atop the leaderboard in the first tournament of the year. complete article |
