| FBR Open Preview SCOTTSDALE - Itıs a sight synonymous with the new year in Scottsdale - white tents, rising high above Frank Lloyd Wright Blvd., perched atop the berm that borders the Tournament Playerıs Club. Like clockwork, each year around this time, those tents seemingly pop up out of nowhere, ready to hold the hundreds of thousands of fans who flock to the FBR Open Super Bowl weekend.
For valley golf nuts and golf media, thereıs no other annual sporting event quite as exciting as the FBR Open. And for PGA Tour players, itıs arguably the most unique tournament in the regular season thanks to rowdy fans, an aggressive course set-up and the Thunderbirds, a group of men as well-known for their charitable works (since 1993, theyıve raised some $46 million) as they are for throwing a really great party. | Aaron Baddeley overhauled his golf swing and won the 2007 FBR Open last February, and then he beat Daniel Chopra in a playoff in December to capture the Australian Masters. In between he nearly won the U.S. Open.
If you think this is progress, well ... you're right.
Baddeley, 26, returns to the Arizona desert -- which also happens to be home -- this week to defend his title at TPC Scottsdale, and he looks like a formidable obstacle for the other 131 players who will tee it up in one of the most popular events on the PGA TOUR.
"I'm really looking forward to it," Baddeley, who tied for 13th at the Buick Invitational, said of his second turn defending a TOUR crown. "Being able to defend the title in front of the hometown crowd is really exciting for me. Even before I won it, this was one of the tournaments I looked forward to the most."
The $6 million FBR Open, which begins Thursday at TPC Scottsdale, celebrates its 73rd year with a strong field headlined by Baddeley and former champion and No. 2 player in the world Phil Mickelson. Despite a late withdrawal from Sony Open in Hawaii winner K.J. Choi, the field boasts 101 of the top 125 money winners from 2007. Complete article |

| Reavie lands FBR Open exemption PGA Tour rookie and former ASU standout Chez Reavie has received a sponsor's exemption for the 2008 FBR Open, Tournament Chairman Tim Louis announced Monday.
"I am so excited, this tournament is like a major for me," Reavie said in a statement from San Diego, where he is set to play in the Buick Invitational this week.
A Scottsdale resident and graduate of Dobson High School in Mesa, Reavie was a three-time All-America golfer at Arizona State University, and he won the 2001 U.S. Public Links Championship. Complete article |

| The TPC Scottsdale and The FBR Open January 30, 2008 -- The Super Bowl is supposed to be the ultimate sporting event, but you might find a half million fans who would argue that it's not even the biggest even in Arizona this weekend. Just a few miles away from the big game is the big event, the PGA TOUR's FBR Open, the noisiest, rowdiest, and most attended event of the season. How does a golf course prepare for such a week when the entire sports universe is focused on this usually quiet region? We talked with PGA Head Professional Greg Wolf of the TPC Scottsdale about the course, the tournament, and the world's loudest golf hole. Complete interview |

| Quinney back for another shot Ask Jeff Quinney, and he'll tell you he had a strong FBR Open a year ago.
The Scottsdale resident and former ASU star shot a career-low 63 in the second round and led after 36 and 54 holes.
It appeared as if the Oregon native could win his first PGA Tour event, especially midway through the final round. Complete article |

| Solid position, but work ahead for Mickelson SCOTTSDALE, Ariz -- For a guy that's in contention to win his third FBR Open, Phil Mickelson sounded Saturday like a guy with a lot of work ahead of him.
"I'm glad that there were more birdies than bogeys," said Mickelson of his 4-under 67, which is one shot better than the 68s he posted on both Thursday and Friday. "But I do need to eliminate those bogeys."
To be exact, there were two bogeys for Mickelson in Saturday's third round, including one on the infamous 16th hole, where his tee shot ended up in the clefts rough behind the green.
After the ball found a home there, the thousands gathered showed the Arizona State grad no favoritism as the boos rang down. He got more boos when his second shot came up well short of the green.
"Just came up a little short," Mickelson said of the effort. "Just didn't hit it solid. Fortunately, it stayed up. It could have come back down." Complete article |

| This time, Leonard hopes for Super ending at FBR Open SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- It's Super Bowl weekend in Arizona, so that means Justin Leonard must be in contention at the FBR Open.
True enough, as Leonard ended Saturday's play at 10-under and on the first page of the leaderboard heading into Sunday's final round.
"it's nice to be back in contention here," he said. "It is Super Bowl Sunday, would love for the outcome to be a little different than last time. Just glad I played a good round to give myself a chance."
The last time the Super Bowl was played in Arizona, back in 1996, Leonard lost a three-hole playoff to Phil Mickelson, who ironically is tied with Leonard heading into Sunday's final round.
Despite the outcome, Leonard said he looks back fondly on that experience. Complete article |

| FBR Open twice as nice for Holmes J.B. Holmes really liked his chances heading into a sudden-death playoff against fan-favorite Phil Mickelson on the latter's home turf at the FBR Open on Sunday.
No, seriously. He did.
Sure, most fans in the TPC Scottsdale crowd were pulling for the other guy, but Holmes loved the hole they were playing first - No. 18 - and the fact that he was still pumped up after rallying to force the playoff with a clutch birdie on the same hole just minutes before while Mickelson, the world's second-ranked player, watched from the clubhouse.
