Couples has new roll model

There's a new putter in Fred Couples' bag for the Northern Trust Open; he just forgets what it's called . . . besides putter, of course.

But forgetting stuff is probably what happens when you're 48, your aching back sometimes feels 88 and you can't remember what it feels like to be comfortable on the greens.

Couples long ago switched to using a belly putter, which earned its name because you anchor the thing in the middle of your stomach.

His new putter is 44 inches long. Couples picked it up from putter-maker Rick Hamilton of San Diego in time to play the Wednesday pro-am at Riviera.

That's about 1 1/2 inches longer than the one Couples used to use.

Phil Mickelson Wins PGA Tour's Northern Trust Open by Two Shots

Phil Mickelson won golf's Northern Trust Open by two strokes over Jeff Quinney to collect his first U.S. PGA Tour title of the season.

Mickelson, runner-up to Charles Howell III last year when the tournament was called the Nissan Open, shot a 1-under-par 70 at Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, California, to finish 12-under overall.

Mickelson had a one-shot lead over Quinney entering today's final round and opened a three-shot advantage on the back nine as Quinney had four bogeys in a five-hole stretch from the 13th to the 17th holes. Quinney closed his final-round 71 with a birdie to finish 10-under, three shots better than Luke Donald and Padraig Harrington.

``I've wanted to win this tournament for a while,'' Mickelson, who's second to Tiger Woods in the world golf rankings, said in a televised interview with CBS. ``Riviera is a great course and it was a tough fight. (Quinney) gave a couple back at the end, but it was a battle.''

At the moment he is in the lead.
I guess that respiritory illness has really forced him into getting in shape. Tiger looks to be on the brink of a legendary season. It would be great if Phil could have his best season this year. It's not as entertaining if Tiger's just killing everyone. It's more entertaining than someone other than Tiger winning, but it would be much better for the PGA tour if Tiger was going at it with Phil every week.

I agree. It's always great to have where the lead changes hands. Much more exciting golf to watch.
