Phil Mickelson won golf's Northern Trust Open by two strokes over Jeff Quinney to collect his first U.S. PGA Tour title of the season.
Mickelson, runner-up to Charles Howell III last year when the tournament was called the Nissan Open, shot a 1-under-par 70 at Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, California, to finish 12-under overall.
Mickelson had a one-shot lead over Quinney entering today's final round and opened a three-shot advantage on the back nine as Quinney had four bogeys in a five-hole stretch from the 13th to the 17th holes. Quinney closed his final-round 71 with a birdie to finish 10-under, three shots better than Luke Donald and Padraig Harrington.
``I've wanted to win this tournament for a while,'' Mickelson, who's second to Tiger Woods in the world golf rankings, said in a televised interview with CBS. ``Riviera is a great course and it was a tough fight. (Quinney) gave a couple back at the end, but it was a battle.''
