Norman part of improved Mayakoba Classsic field on course he designed

PLAYA DEL CARMEN, Mexico (AP) -- Greg Norman is a busy man, running all sorts of companies. So for him to stop and play a PGA TOUR event these days, he usually needs extra incentive.

A few weeks ago, it was joining his 22-year-old son at the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am. This week, it's playing the Mayakoba Golf Classic on a course he designed.

"I was going to be down here anyway, so ... why not?" said Norman, a 2001 inductee into the World Golf Hall of Fame who has played only four PGA TOUR events the last four years, his time otherwise spent laying out courses, overseeing a vineyard and a clothing company, all while going through an ugly divorce then getting engaged to former tennis star Chris Evert.

"If you're here," Norman added, "you might as well tee it up if you're feeling well. And I feel OK. We'll be able to tell come Friday or Sunday."

Norman had hoped to play last year in the inaugural event -- the PGA TOUR's first-ever stop south of the border -- but wasn't healthy enough. A cold slowed him earlier this week, but he was on the tee box for the pro-am Wednesday, curious to seeing if his inside knowledge can help him make the cut, something he hasn't done on the TOUR since 2005.

The Shark would've had a better chance of sticking around for the weekend at this tournament last year.

First-Round Notebook

PLAYA DEL CARMEN, Mexico -- First-round leader John Merrick tied his career low on the PGA TOUR with a 6-under-par 64 on Thursday. Merrick shot an identical 64 last year in the first round at the Mayakoba Golf Classic en route to a tie for 48th finish.

• He also posted a 64 in the second round at the 2007 Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial, but missed the cut. Last year's first-round leader and eventual champion Fred Funk shot an opening 8-under-par 62.

• In his rookie season in 2007, John Merrick finished 135th on the PGA TOUR money list but regained his status through the PGA TOUR Qualifying School, where he tied for 23rd. Merrick's best finish on TOUR was a tie for fourth at the 2007 Reno-Tahoe Open, and his best finish thus far in 2008 was a tie for 16th at the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic.

Merrick keeps Mayakoba lead

PLAYA DEL CARMEN, Mexico (AP) -- Nick Price came to the Riviera Maya feeling good about his retooled swing. Having given up on trying to launch the ball higher, he'd already seen immediate results.

Then he arrived Friday for the second round of the Mayakoba Golf Classic. Feeling the stiff wind blowing off the Caribbean Sea, Price wondered whether his new trajectory could handle it.

No problema. Price shot one of the best rounds of the day, a 2-under 68 that moved him to 2-under 138 for the tournament, putting him into a tie for eighth and into the weekend in his first PGA TOUR start since 2006.

"I've got to pull something out of the hat if I'm going to have a chance," Price said. "But to be honest, I'm just happy to be playing here and also to have made the cut. My game the last 2 years has not been good, and my debut on the Champions Tour last year was not good. And just in the last month or so, I've turned my game around. ... I've bottomed out and I'm looking to get back up again. It's nice to be enthusiastic about playing again."

While Price moved into contention, the other World Golf Hall of Famer in the field -- Greg Norman -- packed up and left after a 79.

In 293rd PGA TOUR start, Gay gets his first victory

PLAYA DEL CARMEN, Mexico (AP) -- Brian Gay's 8-year-old daughter had it on good authority that her father would earn his first PGA TOUR victory Sunday.

The defending champ's 12-year-old son told her so Saturday night.

Although Gay didn't know about the prediction, he did a nice job making it hold up, shooting a 1-under 69 in the final round to win the Mayakoba Golf Classic by two shots over Steve Marino.

The PGA TOUR's second annual visit south of the border became Gay's to lose when he closed the third round with birdies on five of the last six holes. He took a five-stroke lead into the final round and led by at least four throughout the first 16 holes Sunday. Marino moved a shot closer on each of the last two holes, but all it changed was the margin of victory.

In his 293rd career start, Gay finally was a winner; only 12 active players have entered more events without breaking through.
