Fujikawa to play in Honda Classic

Moanalua High School junior Tadd Fujikawa will play in next week's Honda Classic on a sponsor's exemption. The PGA Tour event will be Fujikawa's 11th start since turning pro last year. He is looking to make his first cut.

The $5.5 million tournament is played at PGA National Champion Course in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. It runs Thursday to Sunday (Feb. 28 to March 2).

In May, Fujikawa will play in the Japan Golf Tour Organization's Chunichi Crowns for the second straight year. As an amateur last year he missed the cut by two. Hawai'i's David Ishii won the tournament in 1986.

Both Wilson and PGA National return for a reinvigorated Honda Classic

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. (AP) -- At the Honda Classic, it'll forever be known as the Mark Wilson Rule.

Wilson was struggling just to make the cut at PGA National a year ago, and needed three routine shots to finish the par-3 fifth hole during his second round. Problem was, caddie Chris Jones told Camilo Villegas, who was playing alongside Wilson, what his boss hit on that hole.

That's where Rule 8-1 came into play.

Giving other players advice during competition is prohibited, so Wilson paid dearly for the caddie's mistake. He called a rules official on the sixth tee and docked himself two strokes, putting his chances of staying for the weekend in serious danger.

"I thought we were done," Jones said.

By now, everyone knows Wilson wasn't done.

Florida Swing begins with Honda Classic at redesigned PGA National

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. -- The PGA TOUR travels to Palm Beach Gardens this week for The Honda Classic, the first of four events on the Florida Swing. PGA National Resort and Spa's Champion Course is again the venue.

The course -- an original Tom and George Fazio design that Jack Nicklaus renovated in both 1990 and 2002 -- hosted the tournament for the first time last year and was greeted with wide praise by players.

Mark Wilson won the 2007 Honda Classic in a playoff against Jose Coceres, Camilo Villegas and Boo Weekley. The latter two dropped from the extra session after two holes, and Wilson won his first PGA TOUR title with a birdie on the third sudden-death hole.

The Play Golf America Expo at the Honda Classic is a collaboration between The PGA of America, South Florida PGA Section and the Honda Classic. It will be conducted Thursday, Feb. 28, through Sunday, Mar. 2, at PGA National Golf Club's Fan Zone.

Davis takes lead at Honda Classic

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. -- Britain's Brian Davis shot a three-under-par 67 on Friday to take a one-shot lead after the second round of the PGA Tour's Honda Classic.

Davis went into the second day five under, one shot behind first-round leader and fellow Briton Luke Donald. Donald fell down the leaderboard after shooting an eight on the par-four 14th, while Davis maintained his form from the opening round to move to eight-under.

Davis Leads Honda Classic After 36 Holes

Dudley Hart spent some of Friday afternoon poised to turn The Honda Classic into a runaway. Later in the day, it was Brian Davis' turn to take what seemed like a huge lead.

But PGA National eventually caught up with them.

And by nightfall, the Honda leaderboard was muddled again.

Davis shot a 3-under 67 to finish the day at 8 under, one shot better than Matt Jones (67) and two shots ahead of Hart — a former South Florida resident whose last victory was at the 2000 Honda, and who peeled off six straight birdies in a 66.

"Around this course, I think you'd need about a 20-shot lead with one round to go," Davis said. "You know around here, it's going to come down to the last nine holes, just the way the course is set up. I can't see anybody getting a six-shot lead out there tomorrow."

Donald tied with two others for Honda Classic lead

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Florida (AFP) — Englishman Luke Donald and Aussie Matt Jones are part of a trio tied for the lead after Saturday's third round of the 5.5 million dollar PGA Honda Classic.

Donald, Jones and American veteran Mark Calcavecchia were all at six-under-par 204 and had a one-shot lead over Argentina's Jose Coceres (68) and England's Brian Davis (73).

Davis, who is seeking his first US PGA title, was four shots clear of the field at one point before falling back after finding trouble late in the round.

First-round leader Donald shot a 66 Saturday in a bogey-free round that included four birdies. Donald, who opened the tournament with a six-under 64 on Thursday got back to the top of the leaderboard after a second round marred by a quadruple-bogey on Friday.

"I was a little bit disappointed yesterday," admitted Donald, whose third round included four birdies with no bogeys. "I had one really bad hole on 14. You know, it was nice to bounce back and play very solid today."

Rock Solid Performance: Els returns to Big Easy ways

After three long years, four months and 29 days, Ernie Els again won an event on the PGA TOUR. The win at The Honda Classic was his first on American soil in even longer since his last TOUR victory occurred in Kilkenny, Ireland at the 2004 World Golf Championships-American Express Championship.

The South African has captured more than 60 victories worldwide and he's no stranger to the winner's circle. But Sunday's win at PGA National gave the veteran goosebumps.

"We play out here to win," Els said. "I guess we get addicted to that feeling and, when you don't get your rush, so to speak, you miss it. I definitely missed winning over here."
