Who dominates the Florida events?

After eight weeks in Hawaii, California, Arizona and Mexico, the PGA TOUR heads south to Florida for the next four weeks beginning with next week's Honda Classic in Palm Beach Gardens.

Just as some players tend to excel on the West Coast, Phil Mickelson being a prime example, others see a spike in their game when they get back to Florida and the different grass surfaces they encounter in the state.

Like he is in many sections of the country, Tiger Woods is the top winner in Florida events among active players. Tiger has won 10 TOUR titles in Florida in five different events. Woods has won four Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by MasterCard titles, two Children's Miracle Network Classic presented by Wal-Mart crowns, two Doral Open championships, one PLAYERS Championship and one World Golf Championships-CA Championship title.

Want to take a guess at who's second? If you came up with John Huston, give yourself a gold star. The long-time Florida resident has won five crowns in the state of Florida in four different events.

Older, better Calcavecchia ready to defend PODS Championship crown

PALM HARBOR, Fla. -- The Florida Swing continues this week with the eighth playing of the PODS Championship over the famed Copperhead Course at the Innisbrook Resort.

Last year, PGA TOUR veteran Mark Calcavecchia opened with a 4-over 75 -- the highest first-round score by a PGA TOUR winner since 1997 -- then stormed back on the strength of a third-round 62 to grab a one-stroke victory over John Senden and Heath Slocum.

• Calcavecchia enters the PODS Championship coming off a tie for fourth last week at The Honda Classic. He earned 1,033 FedExCup points and moved from 65th place to 28th with his performance.

• Calcavecchia will be attempting to become the first player to successfully defend a title at the PODS Championship. In 2007, he used the victory at Innisbrook to shatter his career-best in earnings ($2,993,332) and finish eighth in the FedExCup standings. This week is his sixth start at the PODS Championship, with three previous top-25 finishes. Besides his 2007 win, he tied for 19th in 2006 and tied for 24th in 2003.

Local Knowledge: Innisbrook Resort and the PODS Championship

March 5 -- Many golf fans might recognize Jay Overton's name as one of the game's elite players, a veteran of more than 100 PGA Tour events and 25 major championships. But just as important to the golf community is the tireless work he performs as the PGA Director of Golf at Innisbrook Resort, one of Florida's great golf venues. He took some time to talk with John Kim, the Coordinating Producer of PGA.com, to discuss the this week's PODS Championship, why the resort continues to excel, and why the Copperhead course, despite being a Florida icon, is probably out of place in the Sunshine State.

Bryant leads at PODS Championship

Bart Bryant owns a one-shot lead after Thursday's rain-shortened first round of the PODS Championship.

Bryant fired a six-under-par 65 at the Innisbrook Resort and Golf Club, holing six birdies - including a pair on his final two holes - in a bogey-free round.

Play was halted due to rain with 82 golfers still on the course.

Kenny Perry, Jeff Maggert and Stewart Cink all are one stroke behind Bryant at five-under 66, while Lee Janzen was at five-under through 15 holes before rain halted play.

Fred Couples finished two-under in his first start since being named 2009 US Presidents Cup captain. Only once before has he competed in the PODS Championship, tying for 14th in the inaugural edition in 2000.

Defending champion Mark Calcavecchia was at one-under through 13 holes before rain ended his day.

Ernie Els, who posted his first PGA Tour title in three years, four months and 29 days when he was victorious in The Honda Classic last week, was even-par through six holes.

Win drought over, Els still working his way up at PODS Championship

PALM HARBOR, Fla. (AP) -- A bead of sweat dripped off Ernie Els' brow when he stopped for a five-minute chat Wednesday before his pro-am round at the PODS Championship.

The hard part is over for the Big Easy. The hard work is not.

Els ended an 0-for-47 stretch on the PGA TOUR last Sunday when he won the Honda Classic, an astounding drought given his considerable talent. He is among four active players with at least three major championships, but none of the others has gone more than a year without winning on the world's toughest golf circuit.

It took a few days for his victory to sink it, and it was really driven home on the range at Innisbrook.

"The guys are congratulating you," he said. "They're not saying 'hard luck' or 'bad luck' or whatever that is."

Els would not have imagined winning this way.

Maggert leads in rain-delayed PODS Championship

Jeff Maggert owns a three-shot lead at the rain-soaked PODS Championship, which was suspended midway through Friday's second round.

Maggert sank four birdies against one bogey through nine holes Friday, improving his overall score to eight-under.

Kenny Perry and D. Trahan are tied for second place at five-under overall. Perry is at even-par through nine holes, while Trahan has two birdies over his first seven.

Inclement weather and rain have plagued the first two days of this event.

Thursday's first round was suspended due to rain with 82 golfers still on the Copperhead course at Innisbrook.

It was the same story Friday, as 71 golfers still had not completed their second round when the siren sounded to halt play for the day.

Bart Bryant, the first-round leader, is tied for fourth at four-under with Sean O'Hair and Jeff Overton.

Stewart Cink's resurgence is adding yet another guy to "compete" with Tiger on a weekly basis. Plus, he's an American. The better they play, the more likely it is that we don't get trounced by the Europeans again in the Ryder Cup.

Snedeker grabs lead at windy Innisbrook

Palm Harbor, FL (Sports Network) - Brandt Snedeker played 10 holes at four- under par in swirling winds Saturday morning to grab the lead after two rounds of the PODS Championship.

Snedeker was one of 70 players who returned to Innisbrook to complete their rounds after play was suspended Friday afternoon as strong storms approached the Palm Harbor area.

Conditions were drier in the morning, but the strong winds remained. They blew steadily at 25 mph and gusted even higher.

Snedeker, who was one-over par when the horn sounded Friday, ended with a three-under 68 for the second round and held a one-shot lead at five-under 137.
