Woods Will Try to Keep His Streak Alive at Arnold Palmer's Bay Hill Club

World's No. 1 commits to next week's PGA TOUR event

Tiger Woods has twice won a PGA TOUR event four times in a row, a feat that had only been done twice previously in American golf and three times in the game's history. But before he won his fourth straight Buick Invitational in January, Woods first pulled off the feat at the Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by MasterCard with his masterly run from 2000 through 2003.

The No. 1 player in the world made his commitment today to return to the Bay Hill Club in Orlando, Florida, for the 30th edition of the Arnold Palmer Invitational, scheduled for March 10-16. When Woods arrives, he will have yet another streak on the line. Dating back to the 2007 BMW Championship, Woods has won his last four PGA TOUR starts and his last five overall, including a win at the Dubai Desert Classic on the European Tour.

Of course, Woods is no stranger to stringing together TOUR titles; just last year Woods saw his seven-tournament winning streak end at the World Golf Championships-Accenture Match Play Championship. He also

Who dominates the Florida events?

After eight weeks in Hawaii, California, Arizona and Mexico, the PGA TOUR heads south to Florida for the next four weeks beginning with next week's Honda Classic in Palm Beach Gardens.

Just as some players tend to excel on the West Coast, Phil Mickelson being a prime example, others see a spike in their game when they get back to Florida and the different grass surfaces they encounter in the state.

Like he is in many sections of the country, Tiger Woods is the top winner in Florida events among active players. Tiger has won 10 TOUR titles in Florida in five different events. Woods has won four Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by MasterCard titles, two Children's Miracle Network Classic presented by Wal-Mart crowns, two Doral Open championships, one PLAYERS Championship and one World Golf Championships-CA Championship title.

Want to take a guess at who's second? If you came up with John Huston, give yourself a gold star. The long-time Florida resident has won five crowns in the state of Florida in four different events.

If you want to look at him even more closely, he's won eight TOUR titles (official and unofficial) in the state. Huston has won two Children's Miracle Network presented by Wal-Mart titles along with one victory in the PODS Championship, one at the Doral Open and one at the Honda Classic. He's also won three unofficial events in the state--the 1987 Qualifying Tournament along with the JCPenney Classic and the Merrill Lynch Shoot-Out.

Fred Couples, Steve Elkington, Vijay Singh and Greg Norman each have four wins in Florida while Mark Calcavecchia has three.

With the exception of Elkington, all of the players mentioned above have something else in common besides winning frequently in the state ? they either currently, or at one time, resided in Florida.

Hot finish puts Immelman safely over API cut line

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Trevor Immelman chipped in for par on his final hole in the first round and rode the momentum again on Friday, moving from a tie for 82nd to making the cut at the Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by MasterCard.

Immelman fired a 6-under 64 in the second round that included a sizzling 31 on the back nine at the Bay Hill Club to move into a tie for 16th at the midway point of the $5.8 million event. He is tied with Niclas Fasth, Alex Cejka and Dustin Johnson at 3 under, six strokes off the pace being set by defending champion Vijay Singh.

Other players who made a big move on Friday to make the cut were Brian Davis, Tom Pernice Jr., Paul Goydos, Steve Elkington and Steve Marino. Davis made the biggest move, matching Immelman's 64 to move from 101st after the first round into a tie for 29th.

Pernice and Goydos were tied for 82nd after shooting 73s on Thursday. But rounds of 66 and 67, respectively, propelled them into the weekend, where Pernice will start in a tie for 29th and Goydos sharing 38th.

Elkington and Marino, on the other hand, didn't have any room to spare. The two were tied for 61st -- on the cut line at 2-over 142 after rounds of 68 and 67, respectively. Elkington started the second round in a tie for 92nd while Marino, who made five birdies and a double bogey on Friday, shared 101st.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, a pair of 75s on Friday sent Rocco Mediate and Nicholas Thompson plummeting down the leaderboard. Both started the second round tied for 12th but ended up missing the cut by a single stroke.

A total of 71 players made the cut.

Healthy again, Singh leads by two at halfway point

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) -- Vijay Singh was forced to take four days off from practicing, which was unprecedented. He found himself atop the leaderboard one week later at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, which is not surprising in the least.

Weakened by a stomach virus that caused him to lose 18 pounds in five days, Singh recovered in time to make a strong defense of his Bay Hill title by chipping in twice Friday on his way to a 5-under 65 and a two-shot lead over Carl Pettersson.

The 45-year-old Fijian looked like the model of athleticism on a day of gray clouds and occasional rain, not even remotely resembling someone afraid to stray too far from the bathroom for four days.

"I've got a very heavy shirt on. I can see my ribs," said Singh, who was at 9-under 131. "I thought I was going to pull out of this tournament, but on Friday, I just started to hit a few (balls). And that was it."

What he couldn't see on the leaderboard was Tiger Woods, who hasn't been this far out of the lead since the British Open.

I simply cannot believe that Tiger managed to go from 7 down to tied for the lead. That's crazy!

Five-way tie for lead after crazy day at Bay Hill

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) -- Two spectacular shots allowed Tiger Woods to get into the mix Saturday at Bay Hill. What followed was a series of spectacular crashes that put him in a five-way tie for the lead at the Arnold Palmer Invitational.

When a zany, windy and splash-filled afternoon finally ended, Woods was in a familiar position as he tries to extend a winning streak that stretches to September. He shot a 4-under 66 and will be in the final pairing Sunday with Sean O'Hair, who won last week at Innisbrook and shot the best round of the week with a 63.

They were at 6-under 204, joined by Bart Bryant (68), Bubba Watson (68) and Vijay Singh, whose 73 made this all possible.

Singh had a two-shot lead and showed no signs of a struggle until dropping five shots in a four-hole stretch in his front nine of 40. Singh might have been even worse off except for holing out a 30-foot chip for par after hitting into the water on the 16th.

It was the largest log jam in the 30-year history at Bay Hill, and the largest on the PGA TOUR since a five-way tie at the BellSouth Classic in Atlanta in 2005, where the final round was rained out and it turned into a five-man playoff.

Woods was only lurking at 4 under and didn't figure to gain any ground over the final four holes, two of them into 20 mph gusts, the final three with water fronting the green.

But he carved a 4-iron around the trees to 2 feet on the 15th, then hit a 7-iron that held up against the wind and dropped 3 feet right of the flag. That gave him birdies on the two toughest holes of the third round, and it put him in the final pairing for the fifth straight time on the PGA TOUR.

Third-round notebook

Bart Bryant, Sean O'Hair, Vijay Singh, Bubba Watson and Tiger Woods are part of a five-way tie for the lead going into the final round. In 2005 at the BellSouth Classic near Atlanta, there was a five-way tie through 54 holes, and all five?Arjun Atwal, Rich Beem, Brandt Jobe, Phil Mickelson and Jose Maria Olazabal?ended up in a playoff when rain washed out the final round. Mickelson won the event.
