We are very proud to announce that in addition to one of Americas finest young players, Nick Watney we have the #4 ranked player in the world Steve Stricker playing the Zurich Classic of New Orleans. I am also very excited to announce today that the 2007 British Open Champion Padraig Harrington has committed to playing in our event. He will join a long list of great players including David Toms, Retief Goosen, Mike Weir, Chris Dimarco, John Daly, Lucas Glover, Boo Weekly, Bubba Watson, J.B. Holmes, JJ Henry, Woody Austin, Jim Furyk, Brian Bateman and Mark Calcaveccia. I am also very pleased to report that some of world’s best young players are playing the Zurich Classic this year…Anthony Kim, Jonathan Byrd, Daniel Chopra, and Andres Romero. We have 10 of the Top 50 players in the world and 21 players who have won a PGA TOUR event in the past two years which is a great indicator of the strength of our field. Our event will have players from over 10 nations and we expect a large international television audience to spotlight New Orleans.

Williamson looking to make best of opportunity

AVONDALE, La. -- If a golf tournament was a sprint rather than a marathon, you'd find Jay Williamson's name a lot higher on the PGA TOUR's official money list in 2008. But there he was Thursday, off to another good start, a solid, but-could-have-been-better 4-under-par 68 in the opening round of the Zurich Classic of New Orleans..

Here's the thing about Williamson, who was well-positioned in a tie for fifth after 18 holes at the TPC Louisiana, so far in '08. It hasn't been the starts that have bothered him. It has been the weekends and his failure to finish what he started.

Williamson gets to the third round -- moving day in the TOUR vernacular -- and, save for a 66 at the Sony Open of Hawaii, he does a spot-on impression of an immovable object. That is followed by a lethargic fourth round where he has shot better than 74 once in five tries. In other words, the weekends have been expensive propositions for someone who is 134th on the official money list with $128,251.

First-Round Notebook

Dean Wilson carded a first-round 66 in the Zurich Classic of New Orleans on Thursday and will take a one-shot lead over Briny Baird, Peter Lonard and Chez Reavie into Friday's second round.

This marks the third time in Wilson's PGA TOUR career that he has been a leader/co-leader through 18 holes of a TOUR event. He led the 2006 Arnold Palmer Invitational and went on to tie for 10th, and led the 2006 Northern Trust Open and tied for seventh.

• Wilson's round of 66 is somewhat out of the blue as the 2006 INTERNATIONAL champion has made only three cuts in eight starts this year on the PGA TOUR. His best finish came at the Buick Invitational where he wound up tied for 29th.

• The last time a first-round leader went on to win the Zurich Classic of New Orleans was in 1992, when Chip Beck shot a 5-under 67 and was tied with Seve Ballesteros, Brad Bryant and Jay Haas after 18 holes. Beck went on to defeat Greg Norman by a stroke.

Round 3 Notebook

Under mostly cloudy skies, humid temperatures were in the mid-to-upper 80s. Light rain fell mid-morning, with playing being stopped at 1:48 pm CT because of a threatening situation. Play was scheduled to resume at 4:15 p.m., however another cell had developed at that time, lengthening the weather delay. At 5:25 p.m., the third-round was ultimately postponed until 7:20 a.m. Sunday morning.

• At the time of the suspension, Briny Baird faced the longest stretch to finish his third-round. He returns Sunday morning to face a three-foot, three-inch putt on the par-4 fourth hole. With just 35 players in the house after round-three, 46 remain to finish their round from a field of 81.

• Other tournaments affected by weather delays this season have been the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic (15-minute frost delay on Saturday), the FBR Open (frost delays each of the first three days), the PODS Championship (suspensions on Thursday and Friday due to dangerous situations), and last week's World Golf Championships-CA Championship (several threatening situations) which resulted in the first PGA TOUR Monday finish of the year.

Players brace for marathon Sunday after rain hits hard at Zurich

Stormy weather played a cruel joke Saturday on the $6.2 million Zurich Classic of New Orleans at TPC Louisiana.

There will be an excruciatingly long anything-can-happen day Sunday before the 2008 champion is crowned. And considering who is where on a jam-packed leaderboard, there's more than a $1 million first-place check on the line for a slew of contenders, many of whom are seeking their first PGA TOUR victory or a berth in the 2008 Masters, which begins April 7.

Storms packing lightning rolled into the New Orleans area at about 1:30 CT, forcing a suspension of play. And while players were put back in position approximately two hours later, another string of electricity laden storm cells finally forced play to be postponed until Sunday at 6:25 p.m.

Play will resume at 7:20 a.m. CT, with four players -- second-round leader Briny Baird, Woody Austin, Peter Lonard and Nationwide Tour graduate Nicholas Thompson -- tied at the top at eight under par. Five others -- John Senden, Andres Romero, 2005 Zurich champion Tim Petrovic, Steve Elkington and John Merrick -- are one shot back at seven under. Another 12 players are at six under.

Only three players among the top 21 on the leader board -- Senden (66), Daniel Chopra and Jonathan Byrd who are six under -- completed the third round. Meanwhile Baird, who is seeking his first PGA TOUR victory, seems to have drawn the shortest straw. He has 33 grueling holes in front of him Sunday.

Argentina's Romero wins Zurich Classic for first PGA TOUR title

AVONDALE, La. (AP) -- Argentina's Andres Romero walked off the TPC Louisiana a happy man Sunday afternoon. Three hours later, he felt even better.

Romero won the Zurich Classic of New Orleans in his 12th career start on the PGA TOUR, closing with a 4-under 68 hours before the other contenders finished en route to a one-stroke victory over Australia's Peter Lonard.

"I played great these last 36 holes," Romero said. "I made just one bogey in 36 holes, and it's not very common for me to make one bogey in two rounds. But that was the key to being here in contention at this tournament."

Romero, a shot behind John Merrick on Sunday morning after the completion of the third round, had a 13-under 275 total on the TPC Louisiana and earned $1,116,000.

Speaking through an interpreter, Romero said he was very relaxed during the wait to see if his score would hold up.
