For Nationwide Tour golf pro David Hearn, the chance to win $121,500 and a BMW X5 this week in South Carolina is secondary to the opportunity to catch up with an old neighbor: Wayne Gretzky.

With celebrities like Gretzky and actors Joe Pesci and Luke Wilson competing alongside second-tier pros in the BMW Charity Pro-Am, the Nationwide Tour stop has become one of golf's most popular events. In contrast, the AT&T Classic, which also started yesterday, has become little more than a blip for the top-flight U.S. PGA Tour and will need a new sponsor next year.

Hearn was raised five blocks away from the boyhood home of hockey's all-time leading scorer in Brantford, Ontario, and Gretzky's number, 99, is incorporated in the 28-year-old golfer's e-mail address.

``I grew up watching him win Stanley Cups,'' Hearn said. ``So it's exciting for a guy like myself to be out on the course and see him around.''

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Rick Price fired an 8-under-par 64 and moved into the first-round lead at the BMW Charity Pro-Am. Price posted his score at Carolina Country Club, one of three courses being used in the unique format that pairs Nationwide Tour professionals with amateurs and celebrities.

David Mathis and former Clemson star Matt Hendrix carded 7-under 65s at Carolina CC and share second place with Peter Tomasulo and Canada's David Hearn, who were playing in the same group and shot their 65s at Bright's Creek Golf Club just over the North Carolina border in Mill Spring.

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- David Mathis continued his birdie assault at the BMW Charity Pro-Am, shooting a 7-under-par 65 at Bright's Creek Golf Club to grab a two-shot lead at the tournament's halfway point. Mathis is at 14 under after 36 holes of the event, which has Nationwide Tour professionals playing with celebrities and amateurs in a better-ball format.

The tournament is spread out over three courses in the Greenville-Spartanburg area and Mathis will finish his rotation at the tournament's host course, the Thornblade Club, on Saturday. Sunday's final round will also be at Thornblade.

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- David Mathis shot a third-round 69 in the BMW Charity Pro-Am Saturday and moved one step closer to his first career win. Mathis stands at 17-under 198 after 54 holes in the event that pairs Nationwide Tour pros with amateurs and celebrities in a better-ball format, one shot better than Matt Weibring, who held the 54-hole lead one week ago.

The tournament is spread out over three courses in the Greenville area, and Mathis completed his rotation at the host course, the Thornblade Club.

Weibring, who posted a final-round 75 at the Fort Smith Classic and tied for fifth last week, shot a 4-under 68 at Bright's Creek Club to finish at 16 under and get within one of Mathis, who began the day with a two-shot lead after opening with consecutive 65s.

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- David Mathis turned out to be a prophet. The 34-year-old North Carolinian told his wife at the start of the week that he thought he was going to win the BMW Charity Pro-Am. Mathis was true to his word Sunday, capping off a nearly wire-to-wire run with a final-round 68 for a three-stroke margin and his first career title.

"I just felt like I was going to win," he said of thise early-week thoughts. "I've gone into weeks where I was playing well enough to win, but this week felt different. I thought if I made the shots I needed to make and hole some putts that I'd be in this spot."
