British Open Second Round News & Notes

Sergio Garcia appeared to finally have that major championship wrapped up last year at Carnoustie.

He needed to make a six-footer to save par on the 72nd hole. Instead, Garcia's putt lipped out hard and he was off to a four-hole playoff with Ryder Cup teammate Padraig Harrington.

We all know how that went.

Choi one ahead of Norman at British Open

K.J. Choi birdied his final two holes Friday to take the second-round lead at the British Open Championship at Royal Birkdale.

Choi shot a three-under 67 to become the only player under par at the season's third major championship. He finished 36 holes at one-under 139 and is one clear of 53-year-old two-time former winner Greg Norman.

Choi was two shots off Sergio Garcia's second-round lead last year at Carnoustie, but tied for eighth place. He has never won a major championship and feels he has the game plan to finally break through.

"In majors, it's the middle of the greens," said Choi, a seven-time winner on the PGA Tour. "Hitting the greens is very important. I've got good experience in 10 years."

He only hit 13 greens on Friday, but still moved one ahead of the amazing Norman.

British Open Final Round News & Notes

Greg Norman finished off an amazing weekend with a whimper. He held a two-shot lead overnight and bogeyed his first three holes to fall behind.

But "The Shark" got back on track and parred several holes. That was enough to get the lead on the 10th tee, but four back-nine bogeys and a birdie cost him a chance at history.

"I would have loved to have won, no kidding about that," said Norman, who has not won on the PGA Tour since 1997. "I know it was a good week. Can I walk away feeling down? Of course, I can. But can I walk away feeling pretty good? Yeah, I can do that as well."

Harrington repeats his Open triumph in style

Padraig Harrington defended his title in stunning style at Royal Birkdale with an eagle-par finish for a round of 69 and a four-stroke winning margin over Ian Poulter. He is the first European to win back-to-back Championships since James Braid way back in 1906.

After his victory at Carnoustie last year Harrington declared that his intention was to win more majors. He did that today in style: on the par-5 17th, with a two-shot lead over Ian Poulter and an advantage of three over playing partner Greg Norman, Harrington eschewed the safe option and decided to go at the green with his favourite club, his 5-wood.
