Back in the right direction

There's not a bigger week on the calendar for me than this one, the RBC Canadian Open. This is a major, my national championship and a tournament I look forward to more than any other.

And this year, I have to admit to being very excited about what's going on here at Glen Abbey. After last year, when there were so many question marks about the future of the tournament, it's great to see the support that has surfaced. The changes are clear just about everywhere you go -- talking to other players, the volunteers, the media, the look to the course. . . you really feel this tournament is once again headed in the right direction.

I've been especially pleased that the RCGA and RBC have involved the Canadian players in getting a sense of what the tournament needs to grow to the next level. They've approached us and asked what needs to be done and that's a refreshing change. We've had a number of conversations about what we think needs to be done and it's clear they've listened.

'No S' Johnson trying to carve own identity

Richard Johnson goes by the nickname "No S" and even has the golf bag to prove it, featuring one of those red circles with a line through an S that's international sign language for not allowed.

That didn't stop one of the volunteers at the RBC Canadian Open from gushing her congratulations to him when he arrived. It was, of course, Richard S. Johnson who won at Milwaukee last weekend, not the Richard -- No S -- Johnson who shot a four-under-par 67 today at Glen Abbey, putting him in contention on a leaderboard led early by Canadian crowd favourite Mike Weir, Eric Axley and Anthony Kim at six-under 65 when play was suspended by incoming weather at 12:51 p.m. EDT.

"You mean it wasn't me? I'm being congratulated and I assumed it was me, but I haven't got the check yet,'' Johnson cracked.

Weir opens with stellar 65

Mike Weir gave Canadian Open fans what they came to see on another rainy day at drenched Glen Abbey in the RBC Canadian Open.

The Canadian icon shot a bogey-free 6-under 65 on Thursday for a share of the lead with Anthony Kim and Eric Axley during the suspended first round. Only half of the players were able to finish the round that was delayed for 5 hours, 42 minutes.

Birdies lift slumping O'Hair into contention in Canada

- Sean O'Hair has done something so far in the rain-interrupted RBC Canadian Open that he hasn't done a lot of this year on the PGA TOUR. He has made birdies in bunches.

O'Hair, a 26-year-old native of Lubbock, Texas, fashioned eight birdies against two bogeys over Glen Abbey to grab a share of the tournament's first-round lead at 6-under-par 65, then overcame a pair of consecutive double bogeys with four more birdies in a second round of par 71, leaving him within hailing distance of runaway leader Chez Reavie.

Reavie leads Canadian Open; second round continues

Chez Reavie left Mike Weir and the rest of the RBC Canadian Open contenders behind on a long, sunny day at soggy Glen Abbey.

Reavie was 13 under for 33 holes Friday after opening the tournament Thursday with three straight pars. He finished the rain-delayed first round with a 6-under 65 and had a 64 in the second to take a two-stroke lead over Eric Axley.

Reavie sits on top of incomplete round

Chez Reavie left Mike Weir and the rest of the RBC Canadian Open contenders behind on a long, sunny day at soggy Glen Abbey.

Reavie was 13 under for 33 holes Friday after opening the tournament Thursday with three straight pars. He finished the rain-delayed first round with a 6-under 65 and had a 64 in the second to take a two-stroke lead over Eric Axley.

"I got to keep my momentum and just keep playing all day," said Reavie, playing for the sixth straight week. "This is by far my best start. I've been hitting the ball real well all year, but I haven't been scoring real well."

It's nice to see someone other than the regulars win for a change.
