It's a first for tourney leader Overton

Jeff Overton recorded a 7-under 65 to take a two-stroke lead over Harrison Frazar, Brian Davis, Marco Dawson and John Merrick after the first round of the Legends Reno-Tahoe Open. It represents the first 18-hole lead of his career.

Overton held a share of the 36-hole lead and then solo possession of the 54-hole at the 2007 Wyndham Championship before finishing runner-up to Brandt Snedeker by two strokes.

Promising start for Wie in Legends Reno-Tahoe Open

The Legends Reno-Tahoe Open took a gamble by inviting teen sensation Michelle Wie to play in its PGA TOUR event. It looks like the gamble has paid off handsomely.

Electrifying a large and raucous gallery all day, Wie overcame some early-round struggles to battle back and finish her first round one shot over par. Even more germaine is that she has put herself into great position of making the cut, something no female has done since Babe Zaharias in 1945.

Overton leads at 7 under; Wie shoots 1 over

Michelle Wie put herself in contention to make her first cut in eight tries on the PGA TOUR, shooting a 1-over 73 in Thursday's opening round of the Legends Reno-Tahoe Open that left her eight strokes behind leader Jeff Overton at Montreux Golf and Country Club.

Overton, a former all-Big Ten golfer at Indiana, birdied four of the first five holes and made eight birdie putts on the day -- seven from 10 feet or closer -- to go with a lone boge

Wie finishes on high note, but misses cut in Reno

Michelle Wie walked off the ninth green -- her final hole of the day -- and a voice called out, "Thank you for coming Michelle!" The crowd roared and gave an extended applause to endorse the sentiment.

On her eighth attempt on the PGA TOUR, Michelle Wie displayed all the talent and the problems that have dotted her very young but extensive career thus far. After an 8-over 80 in Friday's second round of the Legends Reno-Tahoe Open, Wie moved to 9 over for the tournament and missed the cut.

McLachlin dazzles

Michelle Wie failed in her eighth attempt to make the cut on the PGA TOUR, shooting a second-round 80 at the Legends Reno-Tahoe Open on Friday. Parker McLachlin tied the course record with a 62 to take a four-stroke lead over 1987 Masters winner Larry Mize and three others.

Wie was 1-over-par 73 Thursday as she attempted to become the first woman since World War II to make the cut on TOUR. But a quintuple-bogey 9 on Friday helped push her to 9-over 153 at the par-72 Montreux Golf & Country Club.
