| Weir shoots career-low 61 for first-round lead in Boston Mike Weir shaved his "playoff beard" when his wife and children flew into town this week, but that had no bearing on his golf Friday. This was a round to enjoy, not explain.
Determined to get off to a better start, Weir birdied the first four holes and one-putted his final nine greens in the Deutsche Bank Championship to tie the course record at TPC Boston with a 10-under 61, the lowest round of his PGA TOUR career.
Weir had a three-shot lead over a group of four players that included Vijay Singh, whose victory last week at The Barclays put him atop the standings in the PGA TOUR Playoffs for the FedExCup.
Singh previously had the TPC Boston course record to himself, a 61 in the third round two years ago. And the Fijian set the tone for a day of low scores when he ran off five birdies in a six-hole stretch for a 64.
It took Weir only 10 holes to catch him. Source

| Perfect weather, welcoming course set up for shootout Now that was easy.
That's probably what a lot of guys were thinking upon completion of their respective opening rounds on Friday at the Deutsche Bank Championship, where TPC Boston's par-71 track was torched by those vying to win, or hang around to play another week, in the PGA TOUR Playoffs for the FedExCup.
Under beautiful blue skies with hardly a breath of wind, a total of 79 players recorded sub-par rounds, highlighted by Mike Weir's 10-under 61, which tied the course-record set by Vijay Singh in the third round of 2006. Source

| Less thinking, more feel leads to Clark's run at 59 He knew he shouldn't be thinking about it, but Tim Clark couldn't help it.
He had just driven the green -- well, the fringe, anyway -- on the 298-yard fourth hole at TPC Boston. He was staring at a 22-footer for eagle that would take him to 10 under with five holes and loads of possibilites remaining. Clark wouldn't have been human if he hadn't thought about a potential history-making 59.
The eagle putt went down, the South African's second in his last three holes, and a 4-footer for birdie followed on No. 7 to take Clark tantilizingly close to a number only three other players had ever shot. His gallery was increasing, as were the number of cameras, still and television, poised to capture the moment.
Unfortunately, the record run would end as a pair of bogeys followed. Clark's consolation prize, though, was a one-stroke lead over Mike Weir after the second round of the Deutsche Bank Championship, the second event in the PGA TOUR Playoffs for the FedExCup. Source

| These cuts run deep at the Deutsche Bank Champ There was one cut after Saturday's second round .. and we'll have another cut on Sunday.
With the 36-hole cut falling at 3-under 139, 86 players advanced to Sunday's third round. Since there were more than 78 players to make the cut, the field will again be cut to the low 70 players and ties after Sunday's third round.
The 36-hole cut of 3-under 139 ties the lowest 36-hole cut on the PGA TOUR this year. The Travelers Championship, Buick Open, John Deere Classic and Wyndham Championship also had cuts of 3-under.
MISS THE CUT, OUT OF THE PLAYOFFS: Here are the players who were mathematically eliminated from the PGA TOUR Playoffs for the FedExCup after missing Saturday's cut: Complete list

| 'Spectacular day' vaults Crane into contention Sunday was one of those days when everything just seemed to go right for Ben Crane. In more ways than one.
Not only did the soft-spoken 32-year-old shoot 63 during the third round of the Deustche Bank Championship, he vaulted from a tie for 45th into contention for what could be his third PGA TOUR victory.
Crane made nine birdies and one bogey on Sunday as he moved to 13 under. For the second straight day he weilded a particularly hot putter, taking just 27, one more than Saturday and six less than in the first round. In addition, he only missed one fairway and one green.
"It's just fun to be able to start the ball on line and read it right, and then to be hitting the shots where you're looking," Crane said. "These are the days you look for when you play golf because it's just kind of coming out, just always the way you want it to, and just a spectacular day."
Even when he wasn't hitting it close, Crane was able to convert the birdie putts -- making four from over 20 feet and five from inside 15. In all, the nine birdies came from 3, 7, 35, 9, 24, 34, 23, 12 and 14 feet. Source

| Weir rallies late, but Villegas steals show with 63 Mike Weir holed a 5-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole for a 4-under 67 to take a one-stroke lead Sunday in the Deutsche Bank Championship, leaving him in a familiar position with hopes of a better outcome.
It was the 10th time the Canadian has had at least a share of the 54-hole lead on the PGA TOUR, but he has only one victory when leading going into the final round.
Protecting this one might be the toughest yet.
Camilo Villegas ignored the swirling wind and increasingly firm conditions at TPC Boston to shoot 63, putting him in the final group with Weir for perhaps his best chance at his first PGA TOUR victory.
Three shots behind were Sergio Garcia (68) and Vijay Singh (69), part of the playoff last week at The Barclays that Singh won to move atop the standings in the PGA TOUR Playoffs for the FedExCup. Source

| Singh, Sergio get set for another head-to-head battle Sergio Garcia and Vijay Singh have been making nice with the tops of leaderboards all over the PGA TOUR lately.
Garcia had his big win earlier this year at THE PLAYERS Championship and has been consistent ever since, but still a little perturbed by another runner-up finish to Padraig Harrington in another major. First it was the 2007 Open Championship at Carnoustie, and then it was the PGA Championship at Oakland Hills just a few weeks ago for the Spaniard, who is currently No. 2 in the PGA TOUR Playoffs for the FedExCup standings.
Meanwhile, Singh, currently No. 1 in the Playoffs standings, took a little longer to turn it on then most expected. But in his last four starts, the Big Fijian has two wins -- the World Golf Championships-Bridgestone Invitational and the Playoffs opener at The Barclays just last week. Source

| Despite 75, things appear to work out for Williamson Jay Williamson didn't want to be the only one in his family who didn't have a job next week.
His father will be working as a marshal at Bellerive Country Club during the BMW Championship. His wife is on the hospitality committee while his brother's helping to take care of the caddies. Oh, and his father-in-law is a walking scorer.
"I'm worried about him," Williamson said, chuckling. "He's going to lose his mind."
Williamson's own job is simple, though. Play golf -- and play it well -- in the third event of the PGA TOUR Playoffs for the FedExCup.
While the field of 70 won't be final until Monday afternoon, Williamson appears to have solidified his spot for the tournament being held at his home club -- despite missing the 54-hole cut at the Deutsche Bank Championship on Sunday.
The St. Louis native was 59th in the projected rankings after the third round of the $7 million event at TPC Boston. He was frustrated by the 75 he shot Sunday -- a "little bit embarrassed," Williamson said -- but he knows there's a bigger prize ahead. Source
