Rain washes out first round of BMW Championship

When the fans came out to watch Tiger Woods, there was no tournament. Arnold Palmer once played in a tournament, but fans couldn't get to the golf course.

St. Louis added yet another chapter to its dreary decade of golf history when the first round of the BMW Championship was washed out by storms that dumped 3 inches of rain on Bellerive Country Club.

Villegas Leads BMW Championship By 1

Camilo Villegas and Steve Stricker were excited to be playing golf Friday for different reasons, and it showed in a soggy start to the BMW Championship in St. Louis.

Villegas, 26, from Colombia, is coming off a tie for third last week that allowed him to advance in the PGA Tour FedEx Cup playoffs. He continued his good form with eight birdies on long, soft Bellerive Country Club for a 5-under 65 that gave him a one-shot lead.

Ruling allows Laird to continue playing

Bart Bryant was penalized two shots for opening his mouth.

The twofold ruling that nearly got Martin Laird disqualified and wound up costing Bryant was over a pitch mark on the par-3 16th late in the second round Saturday morning at the BMW Championship.

Furyk has hot day, third round incomplete

Jim Furyk quietly pumped his fist when his final putt of a marathon day disappeared in the cup. Even though it was for bogey, this was cause for a small celebration Saturday at the BMW Championship.

He played 36 holes over 10 hours on a soggy course that made it feel as though he were walking through sand. He took only 128 shots, including an 8-under 62 in the second round to set the course record at Bellerive. He hit 24 consecutive fairways, a streak that ended in the twilight on the 18th hole as focus wavered and he made bogey.

Above all, he gave himself a chance to win.
