| Turnesa shocked by his own success at Viking Classic Marc Turnesa was shocked to see a PGA TOUR rookie's name atop the Viking Classic leaderboard Thursday -- especially his own.
"To be honest with you, I'm surprised I shot 7 under," Turnesa said. "I didn't really feel like I was hitting it great and I didn't hit it great. But putting is a great equalizer. If you can make putts you can get away with a lot of things."
The 30-year-old rookie with a celebrated family history on the PGA TOUR used a 22-putt round for a 65 to take a one-stroke lead over Brian Gay at the Annandale Golf Club. In a field dotted with big names needing a little boost after falling on hard times, Turnesa rolled in eight birdies and took advantage of ideal morning conditions. Complete article

| Turnesa retains lead, MacKenzie goes low Whoa, dude, Will MacKenzie had a killer round at the Viking Classic on Friday. Problem is he can't remember much of it.
A guy like MacKenzie -- a kayaker, heliboarder and surfer -- lives in the moment. And his 8-under 64 was so last hour when he met with reporters, even if it did boost him into a four-way tie at 10 under, a stroke behind leader Marc Turnesa.
"I'm trying to think," he said when asked about his birdies on Nos. 1 and 3. "Those were close."
Wasn't the birdie putt on No. 3 from 28 feet?
"Oh, yeah."
How about the birdie on No. 5?
"I don't remember 5," he said. "I have to sit here and really think about it." Complete article

| MacKenzie's rules infraction gives Turnesa advantage Will MacKenzie simply "spaced out" on the last hole.
Penalized two strokes for moving impediments in a hazard, MacKenzie lost three shots on No. 18 to give the Viking Classic lead back to Mark Turnesa.
MacKenzie's 8 Saturday on the par-5 18th left him tied for second with Brian Gay, two strokes behind Turnesa on the Annandale course.
"I made a huge mistake," MacKenzie said. "A very costly mistake."
Turnesa, a PGA TOUR rookie who also topped the second-round leaderboard, shot a 6-under 66 for a 17-under 199 total. MacKenzie and Gay had 67s. Complete article

| MacKenzie takes down Turnesa, Gay in extra holes At the 11th hole in the Viking Classic on Sunday, Will MacKenzie was trailing good buddy Marc Turnesa by six strokes and thinking it would be great for Turnesa to win his first PGA TOUR title.
After all, it looked as if MacKenzie would end up fifth or worse.
"There was a time today when I wanted him to win," MacKenzie said. "When I was so far behind, I really wanted Marc to win it."
Instead, MacKenzie gave himself a talking to and went on to birdie the par-5 18th three straight times to win in a playoff for his second PGA TOUR victory.
"I was sort of chalking it up," MacKenzie said. "Then I thought, play well down the stretch Will, maybe you can get a couple more birdies and then you will have a solid week."
A free spirit who dropped out of golf for almost 10 years and lived in his van for five, MacKenzie rallied to beat Turnesa on the second playoff hole after Brian Gay dropped out on the first extra hole. Source
