Kim off to blistering start at East Lake, leads by four

The same Anthony Kim who out-Sergioed Sergio Garcia at the Ryder Cup showed up to play at THE TOUR Championship presented by Coca-Cola on Thursday.

The joyful 23-year-old wasn't whipping the crowd into a patriotic frenzy like he did at Valhalla when he beat the Spaniard 5 & 4 in the opening singles match on Sunday. But Kim was hitting the same kind of precise shots and holing a bevy of birdie putts in the first round of the final event of the PGA TOUR Playoffs for the FedExCup.

Singh struggles at East Lake

Four days after Anthony Kim humbled Sergio Garcia in the Ryder Cup, he beat 29 players just as badly Thursday at THE TOUR Championship presented by Coca-Cola.

Showing no effects of a Ryder Cup hangover, Kim fired off eight birdies on his way to a 6-under 64 in his TOUR Championship debut to build a four-shot lead over Masters champion Trevor Immelman, Ernie Els and Phil Mickelson.

Kim and the other nine Americans from the winning team rarely got through a hole without hearing someone in the gallery congratulate them on their five-point victory over Europe on Sunday. Kim was smiling just as wide as he did Thursday.

"I feel like when I'm happy, having a good time, I'm going to make some birdies," he said. "So it was a good vibe out there."

Vijay Singh wasn't feeling it.

Garcia back on track

The Sergio Garcia everyone expected to see at Valhalla last week surfaced Friday at THE TOUR Championship presented by Coca-Cola.

Europe's Mr. Ryder Cup was nothing if not on top of his game as he fired a 65 that pulled him within two strokes of his singles nemesis, Anthony Kim, at the midway point of the finale of the PGA TOUR Playoffs for the FedExCup.

The turnaround has been decisive -- and quick. The normally fiery Garcia had inexplicably gone winless in four matches at Valhalla, capping off an extremely frustrating week by losing to an equally feisty Kim 5 and 4 on Sunday.

Pairing of Kim and Garcia will be great theater

It took Rocky Balboa more than two years before he appeared on the big screen again for his grudge match with Apollo Creed. It took the Celtics 21 years to avenge their loss in the 1987 NBA Finals to the Lakers. Heck, the Trojans are still waiting to face the Greeks again after that whole Trojan horse fiasco 3,000 years ago.

Sergio Garcia, meanwhile, needed just six days before getting another shot at Anthony Kim.

Mickelson, Kim, Garcia battle for award as well as trophy

An interesting subplot at THE TOUR Championship presented by Coca-Cola this week is the race for the Vardon Trophy and the Byron Nelson Award. Those two honors go to the player with the lowest adjusted scoring average.

The top four players in the standings are in the 30-man field at East Lake, with three of the four in contention. The fourth, Vijay Singh, will win the FedExCup and its $10 million bonus when he signs his scorecard on Sunday but has taken himself out of the running for scoring honors when he opened with rounds of 73 and 74.

Garcia turns tables at East Lake, leads by three

The cheers weren't as loud, but Sergio Garcia had heard them before.

Six days ago at the Ryder Cup, he was helpless as Anthony Kim fired at flags and birdied nearly half his holes in a 5-and-4 romp that revved up the gallery during an American victory.

It looked like more of the same early Saturday at THE TOUR Championship presented by Coca-Cola, especially when Kim made everything in sight to build a three-shot lead on the front nine at East Lake. This time, fortunes turned in the Spaniard's favor.

Garcia kept hitting good putts until enough of them went in that he turned a three-shot deficit into a three-shot lead with a 3-under 67, leaving him poised to become only the third player to capture THE PLAYERS Championship and THE TOUR Championship in the same year.

Kim falls behind on awkward day at TOUR Championship

Anthony Kim's first clue came when he realized he was the only player left in the locker room Saturday morning.

He'd been shooting the breeze with the attendants when one of them happened to mention that he only had about 30 minutes before his 11:25 a.m. date with Sergio Garcia. The surprised Kim immediately headed to the range to hit some balls -- and chat some more.

"I was still talking to everybody, which I probably need to shut my mouth and go practice," recalled Kim, who normally allows himself an hour and 15 minutes to prepare. "But I was still having a good time talking to the gallery."

Villegas makes it two in a row at TOUR Championship

A two-putt par to win THE TOUR Championship in a playoff was worth an extra $1.5 million to Camilo Villegas.

A 7-iron to a scary pin on the 71st hole, under more pressure than he has ever faced?

That was invaluable.
