Back at 100 percent, Gore encouraged by play

Jaxon Gore was wheeling his way through the obstacle course in trampoline class the other day when he decided he wanted to hit something. He picked the padded wall.

But he paused to ask permission.

Dad Jason just smiled and shook his head.

"Go ahead,'' he said. "Just don't hurt the wall.''

That said, Jaxon went full bore. Shoulder down. Serious brute force -- for a 4-year-old.

Jaxon's fearless. And a chunk -- dad's word -- off the old block.

Knock either one of them down and they'll get right back up. Tell them they can't do something and they will. They're more than a little stubborn, but they're also driven by confidence.

Green shoots 62 to lead Valero Texas Open

Australia's Nathan Green shot an 8-under 62 on Thursday to take a two-stroke lead over Olin Browne and Paul Claxton in the Valero Texas Open.

Green, winless in three seasons on the PGA TOUR, birdied nine of the first 16 holes before dropping a stroke on the par-3 17th and closing with a par.

"I didn't feel really good before the round started and then on the first hole I snapped my drive, it hit a rock and bounced back in the fairway," Green said. "From there, everything went pretty well."

Stroud shoots 64, leads Valero Texas Open by two

Former Lamar University star Chris Stroud moved into position to make a big jump on the PGA TOUR money list, shooting a 6-under 64 on Friday to take a two-stroke lead after the second round of the Valero Texas Open.

The 26-year-old Stroud, 209th on the money list in an injury-plagued season, had a 10-under 130 total on the La Cantera Golf Club's Resort Course.

A two-time All-America selection and four-time Southland Conference player of the year at Lamar in Beaumont, Stroud had three birdies and a bogey on the first five holes, added a birdie on No. 9 and also birdied 11, 13 and 15.

Johnson's win casts light on tough year for Iowa, himself

This one was for Iowa.

For Cedar Rapids. For the victims of June's tornadoes and floods who are still struggling to put their lives and businesses back together.

For the people who've had his back ever since junior golf.

Yes, Zach Johnson is that humble.

No matter how big a deal it was for him to push through and win for the first time in nearly 17 months, to throw out a closing 64 and come from one shot back a couple of times Sunday to take the final autumn-slated Valero Texas Open by two shots, it was, well, equally as big a deal back home.

"I'm dedicating this one to them,'' Johnson said. "They mean a lot to me.

"They they've been with me supporting me unconditionally. I'm giving this one back to them.''

And what a win to give back.
