Well, I won't say that it is all luck, because I know there is skill involved. But to me, a sport is something physical that involves a definately pitched competition between two oposing forces (football, baseball, tennis). Poker, chess, bowling, cheerleading -- not sports.

I would label it as a pursuit. A game of skill (mental). There is a phrase"I would rather be lucky than good" but there is a ton of mental processes involved. Not a sport.

Indeed it is more of a hobby, more than it is a sport, sports actully involve physical activity this is more of a game with your mind.

The dictionary says a sport is a competive physical activity involving skill. So, poker has two of the three, but that won't cut it.

I am a huge poker fan. But I can't afford to gamble for a hobby just yet

why can't mental activity also be a sport? Do yo give less credo to the top Chess players in the world than you do a top wide receiver?

I agree there is more luck in poker than golf, etc, the best in the world are usually on top.

Because a sport is specifically defined as a physical activity. It's not a matter of who works harder or is more skilled at what they do.

Is poker a sport?

Gonna have to say no on this one.... although it's a tough 'no', merely because if you're saying it's not a sport because it's a game of luck - well then you're dead wrong

Poker is a game of skill moreso than a game of chance. You make your own luck, with the exception of the few instances where the cards tell the whole story. But poker tournaments aren't won by the guys who get the best cards every hand, they are the guys who make the best plays throughout the day....

So in that sense, it's more of a sport than people give it credit for, albeit a 'mental' competition.

That being said, I wouldn't classify it as a full sport because in my mind, Hockey, Football, etc.... THOSE are sports. Golf, Fishing, Baseball, etc... same thing.

The only reason poker gets considered as *possibly* being lumped in as a sport is because of the prize money and lucrative winnings for doing well.

And for the record, I live in Las Vegas, I'm an avid poker player, and I'm the director of the Sin City Poker League

So saying it's not a sport, and more in the class with chess than in a class with golf, pains me
