| is poker a sport? High level poker requires a substantial degree of autonomic control. Autonomic control is at the heart (pun) of most successful repetitive athletic endevour. continued excellence (strived for, or achieved) at high-level tournament poker should be regarded as at least a 'fringe' sport. intense concentration is taxing if repeated... (re: your/my last birdie-double... athelete?)
poker can cause great physical stress... is that a sport.. just to endure? i dunno.. it Is just sittin in a chair... |

| I don't know if I would call it a sport, but I don't think it's all luck by any means. I think that it requires a great deal of talent, and quite a bit of control over you body and mind. It's a competition more than anything, in my mind. |

| Poker seems to be a sport to the media, but I wonder if it will fall out of favor in that regard over time. I wonder if it will take on more of an aura of a game show, like Wheel of Fortune or Jeopardy.
This more recent thought in my mind has been borne by reading the stories about Michael Vick and dog fighting. As a side bar to that, the NFL is making its policy about player's ties to gambling very clear. To illustrate their point, they turned Vick down on his initial request to serve an NFL suspension concurrently with any prison time he may do by virtue of his guilty plea.
Baseball, golf and hockey also have very stringent rules about professional players gambling.
I wonder if poker, which is essentially a sport based around gambling, (those chips don't represent M&M's), will eventually be downgraded to the recreational game it started out being due to the inherent gambling aspects?

| By definition; if one wants to stretchhhhhhh the meaning, then I guess it would technically be considered a sport (so to speak), but then by that qualification, Monopoly, and even "Candy Land" would be considered a sport (lol)..seriously.
I would consider it a "Professional Game" like Backgammon, or Chess; but not a "Sport" in all fairness to the term. Setting aside traditional sports(Basketball, Football, Soccer, Baseball, Hockey, Track and Field, Golf, etc), even Field Sports (Sportfishing, Hunting, Archery, etc); I think if it took or incorporated a physical skill, like Billards, Table Tennis(which is considered a mainstream sport in Asia), etc, then I would consider Poker or competitive card playing of any sort, a sport....but it's not. To be fair to Poker, I would give it the title - 'Mind Sport'.
