World Jr Hockey

Although this hockey tournament hardly gets any attention in USA it is a major sporting event here in Canada.
Canada is going for their 4th Gold Medal in a row in the Czech Republic and the tournament kicks off on our Boxing Day, December 26.

As I said, this is a big event for Canadians. People take time off work at this time of year to be able to watch these games. They travel overseas to watch games. A few years ago when the games were in the US there was actually more Canadians in attendance than Americans

One of the goalies for Team Canada plays for the London Knights, a team that plays in the city of London Ontario. I have been to many of the Knights games, my brother in law is the Equipment Manager for the Knights. The goalie is Steve Mason, who was drafted by the Columbus Blue Jackets of the NHL.

Drew Doughty is a member of Team Canada and he is a London resident and is a defenceman for the Guelph Storm.

If you have a chance to watch any of the games make sure you do You'll be watching many future players of the NHL

Team Canada started their defense of the IIHF World Jrs with a win over the Czech Republic. This win set a tournament record for the 19 straight wins by a team.
Two 17 year old players were the offensive force behind the win. John Travares with 2 PP goals and Steve Stamkos with 3 assists. Stamkos is currently rated as the #1 Draft Pick for the 2008 NHL Draft.
Steve Bernier, a pick of the L.A.Kings had the shutout for Canada.

Team Canada got a wake up call yesterday when Sweden beat them 4-3. Three goals in less than 4 minutes early in the third period set Canada back on their heels. THe nail went in the coffin with 7 seconds left in the third when Sweden scored as a result of a give away by Canada.

This loss could be a good thing for Canada as it will wake them up and realize they have some competition and need to play 60 minutes of hockey.

The problem with the loss is it now makes it harder for Canada to get a by into the medal rounds. They need to win their next game and have the Czech Republic lose by 5 goals to Sweden. That is unlikely to happen.

It is amazing that there is so many Canadians in attendance for these games considering the tournament is in the Czech Republic.

Is there no hockey fans on this forum? You do know USA has a team in this tournament don't you?

Canada bounced back with a win over Denmark today. There is a possibility that Canada could meet USA in the semi finals.

CANADA WINS THE GOLD MEDAL

Team Canada won the World JR Tournament in overtime this afternoon against Sweden. After pulling within one goal on a power play goal early in the third period, Sweden scored with the extra attacker on the ice with 45 seconds left to tie the game.

Canada came back in overtime to win 3-2.

This is Canada's 4th straight Gold Medal in this tournament.

Steve Mason, Canada's goalie in the last 3 games won Tournament MVP, Top Goalie Of The Tournament and the 3rd Best Player For Team Canada in the Gold Medal game. Steve has been the goalie for the London Knights who play in the OHL. He was traded to the Kitchener Rangers of the OHL on Jan.3. The Knights traded him for 3 players as they will try to rebuild for the 2008 season.

Earlier in the day Team USA were defeated by the Russian's 4-2 in the Bronze Medal game.

BTW, I am shocked that not one other member of this "WORLD WIDE FORUM" has not commented about this hockey tournament in this thread. Either no one is visiting the forum, or there is only one hockey fan on this forum and that would be me.
