Exclamation Stephen Ames - Golf Profile

Birthdate: April 28, 1964
Nationality: Canadian
Trinidadian
Turned Professional: 1987
Current Tour: PGA

Background:

For Stephen Ames, golf runs in the family. His Grandmother was a two-time Trinidad and Tobago champion and his younger brother, Robert, has competed in three WGC-World Cups as his caddie. Ames’ Canadian citizenship comes from his wife, a former flight attendant. He debuted with a record breaking six –under par (total of 66), shattering the course record at Sandy Lane, Barbados at the age of sixteen. He made his way to the United States on a scholarship and turned professional in 1987. Ames divides his time between Canada and his family in the Caribbean.

Professional Career Bio:

Early in his career, Ames was sidelined by a neck injury. His first professional victory came in 1991 with the Ben Hogan Classic, yet he still had not earned a PGA Tour Card. In 1992, Ames qualified for the European Tour, instead and was a five season consistent player – making the top eighty Order of Merit each year and a personal best of 13th in 1996. His first six seasons on the PGA barely saw him break the top forty. Determined, he sought a new level for his game, and in 2004, he won the Cialis Western Open among a highly competitive field of Tiger Woods, Vijay Singh and Davis Love, III.

A top 100 finish on the money list capped his 2005 season –making it the eighth in a row for Ames. That year, he made his first appearance at The Masters and recorded his first top ten finish with a tie for 6th at the MCI Heritage. In 2006, despite a rough defeat by Tiger Woods at the World Match Play Championship, Ames took The Players Championship by finishing with a 6 stroke margin over Retief Goosen. This win finally pushed Ames past the $10 million money mark, climbing to 37 places to reach 27th in the Official World Golf Rankings.
