When Reidsville’s Mike Goodes claimed fully-exempt status on the Champions Tour with a top-30 finish on the 2008 money list, one event he wasn’t eligible for was the Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf.
That changed back in February when Goodes won the first full-field event of the year, the Allianz Championship. Now he’s set to tee it up with D.A. Weibring in the Legends Division’s bestball competition. A field of 32 teams will play Friday through Sunday at The Club at Savannah Harbor in Georgia.
Goodes is coming off a tie for 21st at last weekend’s Outback Steakhouse Pro-Am. He shot 71-73-69 to finish at even-par 213 on the TPC Tampa Bay course and ended nine shots off the pace of Nick Price. It was his best finish since February when he followed up the Allianz title with a tie for seventh in the ACE Group Classic. He had ties for 36th, 41st and 59th in the three subsequent events.
A $17,995 payday last Sunday pushed his cash count to $341,760 for the year, which ranks 11th on the money list.
This Legends of Golf, despite being a bestball, also counts in official money. There’s a $2.6 million purse with $255,000 awarded to each member of the winning team.
Weibring is off to a slow start this year with just $72,755 in seven events. He is in the field by virtue of his win in the Senior Players Championship last October.
