I've been playing golf for over 60 years and in all that time, the best tip I ever got was simple. Never discount the value of lessons from a PGA pro.
Not just new golfers, but old golfers too tend to imitate the pros they se on tv and obviously we don't do it well. Your PGA pro can help you understand what you have to work with and help you develop the best swing for your body type or capabilities.
My personal suggestion would also be to find good equipment. There are quite a few good, responsible sellers of professional quality clubs... Callaway Preowned, Taylormade Preowned, Rock Bottom Golf and many more.
There are a lot of sets made to copy the style of name brands, but they aren't made very well and the inconsistent results they produce are often taken to be swing issues when they aren't.
