Background:

Phil Mickelson is a lefty – and a righty. He swings a golf club with his left and writes with his right. A native of San Diego, Mickelson attended Arizona State University on a golf scholarship, graduating in 1992. He was the first ever left-hander to win the U.S. Amateur title. Throughout the ups and downs of his career, Mickelson has been known to exude grace after defeat, respect the game and remain polite, loyal and honorable to the fans and the traditions of the game. Some controversy exists over his behavior with fellow athletes, however, some claiming that his personality on the course, doesn’t match how he treats his colleagues behind the scenes.

Professional Career Bio:

While an Amateur, Mickelson won his first PGA Tour tournament in 1991. Over the next several years, his career continued to rise and he became known for his powerful swing and extraordinary short game, complete with his signature “Phil Flop”, a large, lofty swing with a wedge that allows the ball to fly into the air for a short distance. As he progressed, it seemed that he would never achieve the “Magic Major”. His 2004 career though otherwise – with a 20 foot final hole birdie, which he defeated Ernie Els. This lead to a win the next year with a win at the 2005 Baltusrol PGA Championship, followed closely by a third win at the 2006 Masters. At that time, he was ranked second in the world only to Tiger Woods.
