Rory McIlroy, who is third behind Martin Kaymer and Paul Casey in the Race to Dubai standings on the European Tour, is the golfer best positioned to benefit from Kaymer’s go-karting accident in the United States.

With the German sidelined for perhaps three months after an operation to repair three broken bones in his left foot and Casey not playing because of a rib injury incurred during the week of the Open Championship, McIlroy has a real chance of winning the $2 million (about £1.2 million) that goes to Europe’s No 1 at the end of the season. He is €286,923 (about £252,000) behind Casey and €303,833 behind Kaymer.
